The Philadelphia 76ers have always been a team that keeps a keen eye on their finances, often avoiding the luxury tax like a seasoned pro dodging a defender. This year, they executed a trade that surprised many by sending Jared McCain, their promising 2024 first-round pick, to the Oklahoma City Thunder. In return, the 76ers received a 2026 first-round pick from the Houston Rockets and three second-round picks.
McCain, who had shown flashes of brilliance before a meniscus injury, is now flourishing with the Thunder. Just recently, he poured in 21 points on 7-12 shooting in a commanding 105-86 victory over the Brooklyn Nets.
This performance was particularly impressive as OKC was without stars Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jalen Williams. McCain’s rise has given the Thunder some breathing room to rest their key players, much to the dismay of 76ers fans.
For Philadelphia, trading McCain was a bold move. He seemed destined to be a cornerstone for the team after an impressive rookie season. Now, as he shines in Oklahoma City, 76ers fans are left wondering what could have been.

Social media lit up with reactions:
“Jared McCain playing so well shows how bad Nick Nurse is with this roster,” tweeted @Youdownwith_LNV.
“Sixers gave Jared McCain away for practically nothing. Unserious organization,” added @TimeoutSPORTS3.
“I was right about Jared McCain. I mean, SAM PRESTI traded for him,” chimed in @Glenjr1988.
76ers president Daryl Morey commented that they were “selling high” on McCain. Whether that strategy pays off remains to be seen, but right now, it’s a tough sell for Philly fans.
