PHILADELPHIA - A Homecoming for Jared McCain
The Oklahoma City Thunder hit the court for a Monday morning shootaround, and for Jared McCain, it was a trip down memory lane. Drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers as the 16th pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, McCain quickly became a fan favorite.
Known for his infectious smile and locker room presence, McCain made a mark both on and off the court in Philly. But this time, he entered Xfinity Mobile Arena as a visitor.
"It's definitely different," McCain reflected. "Arriving here, staying at a hotel, being on the opposing side-it’s a weird but nostalgic feeling. It's nice to be back."
McCain's rookie journey was a rollercoaster. A torn meniscus in his left knee cut his first season short after just 23 games.
Then, a torn UCL in his right thumb delayed his start to the 2025-26 season. Despite these setbacks, McCain showcased his sharpshooting skills, hitting 38.3% from beyond the arc as a rookie and maintaining a solid 37.8% with the Sixers before being traded to the Thunder.
As he prepares for his return to Philadelphia, McCain shared his thoughts on his time with the Sixers, his teammates, and the emotions surrounding his trade to Oklahoma City.
Reflecting on Philadelphia
"Being drafted here was the greatest day of my life," McCain said with gratitude. "I'll always be thankful to Philly and Daryl Morey for believing in me.
The experience was invaluable, learning from vets like Kyle Lowry and receiving support from the coaches and medical staff through my injuries. There are countless things this organization did for me that never made headlines, and I'll forever be grateful."
Keeping Bonds Strong
McCain still keeps in touch with his Sixers family. "Those are my guys, my brothers for life," he shared.
"I was just talking to Adem Bona last night. I'm excited to see them all."
The Trade Experience
Recalling the day he was traded, McCain said, "We were on the bus after the Golden State game, heading to the airport. My agent called, hinting something might happen.
Minutes later, Daryl called to confirm the trade. It was an emotional moment.
I traveled back to LA with the team before heading to OKC to start the next chapter."
Finding Peace with the Trade
"When the trade happened, it felt like a breakup with your first love," McCain admitted. "But now, I see it as part of a bigger plan.
I trust in my faith and believe everything happens for a reason. I'm grateful for my time in Philly and excited for what's ahead with the Thunder."
Physical and Mental Resilience
Physically, McCain feels strong. "I’m nearing 82 games, which feels surreal since I haven’t completed a full season yet," he noted.
"Coming back from injury took longer than expected, but I was on the right path before the trade. Now, I’m focused on being confident and adjusting to my new team."
Jared McCain’s journey is a testament to resilience and adaptability. As he steps onto the court in Philadelphia once more, it’s clear that his time with the Sixers has left a lasting impact, and his future with the Thunder holds promise.
