Jared McCain is all about living in the moment, and his journey through the NBA reflects that mindset. The 22-year-old guard found himself in Philadelphia on Monday, but this time, he was wearing the visitor's jersey for the first time.
"It's definitely different," McCain shared after the Thunder's morning shootaround at Xfinity Mobile Arena. "Arriving here, staying at the hotel on the other side-it’s a strange feeling.
But it’s great to be back. It feels nostalgic."
Reflecting on his trade from the Sixers to the Thunder, McCain admitted he was initially "shocked" and "confused." The deal, which involved one first-round and three second-round picks, left him wondering about his new role with the defending champions.
"When Daryl Morey told me, I didn’t even catch which team I was going to at first," McCain recalled. "I just heard ‘traded’ and that was it.
But when I realized it was OKC, I thought, ‘They just won a championship… why me?’ It was a bit intimidating, wondering what would come next.
But the team has been incredibly welcoming. The vibe here is fantastic, and the culture has made the transition smooth."
Since joining the Thunder, McCain has been making the most of his 19.3 minutes per game, averaging 12.3 points and 2.4 rebounds while shooting an impressive 44 percent from beyond the arc. His absence is felt in Philadelphia, where the Sixers are struggling with injuries and three-point shooting woes.
Despite the trade, McCain holds no hard feelings towards Sixers fans. "I always loved the Philly fans," he said with a smile.
"They were supportive, even when I was injured. The messages I’ve received have been incredibly kind.
I’ll always have love for them."
Adjusting to life in Oklahoma City wasn’t without its challenges. "Getting traded isn’t something you wish for," McCain admitted.
"Being where you’re drafted feels like a first love, and leaving is like a breakup. But I believe everything happens for a reason.
My faith in God and the universe keeps me grounded. I’m grateful for where I am now."
McCain stays connected with his former teammates, calling them "brothers for life." He mentioned a recent chat with fellow 2024 draftee Adem Bona and highlighted Kyle Lowry as a guiding influence.
As he prepared to face his former team, McCain couldn’t help but reflect on his draft day. "It was the best day of my life, being drafted by Philly.
I’ll always be thankful to them and to Daryl for that opportunity. There are countless things this organization did for me that I’ll forever appreciate."
In true McCain fashion, he concluded with gratitude: "I’m trying not to get too emotional, but I’m incredibly thankful to the Sixers for letting me be myself."
