Hawks Just Created A New Problem For The Sixers In The East

As the Eastern Conference heats up, the Atlanta Hawks are poised to become a serious threat to the Sixers with their bolstered lineup and strategic maneuvers.

The Hawks didn’t chase a headline-grabbing summer, but they did something plenty of teams talk themselves into and few actually pull off: they got deeper.

That matters in a conference that is only getting tighter. Atlanta enters 2026-27 with a roster built less around one massive swing and more around a pile of useful pieces, and that kind of accumulation can become a problem for everybody else. For the Sixers, the Hawks remain one of the teams worth circling.

Atlanta kept its priorities in house by re-signing CJ McCollum and later bringing back Jock Landale, who emerged as a useful backup center late last season. Jonathan Kuminga looks likely to move on after a short stint with the Hawks, especially after Atlanta added former Oklahoma City wings Lu Dort and Aaron Wiggins in separate deals.

The result is a group with real layers. The Hawks now have 17 players on the roster, and even after moving on from a former No. 1 overall pick, they still need to trim two spots at some point.

At the top of the depth chart, there’s a strong case that Quin Snyder has a legit top nine to work with. In the backcourt, Atlanta can lean on McCollum, Dyson Daniels, Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Kingston Flemings.

On the wing, Jalen Johnson, Dort and Wiggins give the Hawks a versatile mix. Inside, Onyeka Okongwu and Landale anchor the middle.

And that’s before you even get to the extra options. Buddy Hield and Corey Kispert can stretch the floor, while Asa Newell, Zuby Ejiofor and Mo Gueye give Snyder more size to play with. That kind of optionality is exactly what a coach wants when the schedule starts grinding and lineups start changing by the week.

The big lineup question is obvious: which three of McCollum, Daniels, Alexander-Walker and Dort will start alongside Johnson and Okongwu? Last season, the holdovers all had a role that made sense. McCollum delivered in clutch moments, Daniels brought elite defense, and Alexander-Walker took a huge offensive step while keeping his defensive edge, which earned him Most Improved Player honors.

If there’s a lean right now, Dort looks like the most natural fit in the starting group because of the size he brings and the off-ball role he can handle. That would leave the other guard minutes to sort themselves out, with Alexander-Walker as a strong candidate to make a run at Sixth Man of the Year.

Atlanta also has the kind of draft capital and roster flexibility that could put it in the trade market during the season if the right opportunity shows up. The bigger picture, though, is that the Hawks already made one important move by shifting the team away from Trae Young and toward Johnson, and that transition worked. In a crowded East, the slow build might still be the smartest path.

As for the Sixers connection, Buddy Hield is the only Hawk with previous Philadelphia experience. His few months with the Sixers in 2023-24 were memorable, and he also plays a notable role in VJ Edgecombe’s basketball life. The two guards have teamed up internationally for The Bahamas.

Sixers May Have Found A Low Cost Fix Behind Joel Embiid

The Sixers enter the 2026-27 season looking as if the starting group is already set, with Joel Embiid flanked by LeBron James and Jaylen Brown in what would be an imposing top end. The deeper question is what comes after that, especially on the back line where Philadelphia could still use a cheaper answer than another splashy move.

One name that stands out is a big man with the kind of size and rim protection teams always end up chasing when the market tightens. Indiana is expected to be careful with its core, which makes the search trickier, but this option has the appeal of being more realistic than a lot of the alternatives and comes with the durability of a full season in 2025-26. For a Sixers team built around star power, finding a workable fix behind Embiid may be the kind of under-the-radar move that matters most. [Read more 🡒]

VJ Edgecombe Is Forcing A 76ers Question Fans Will Love

VJ Edgecombes summer run with Team Bahamas has only added to the sense that the 76ers may have something more on their hands heading into next season. The sophomore guard has been leading the way in FIBA World Cup Qualifiers with strong statistical production, and for a Philadelphia team that already leans on established stars, his development is suddenly starting to look like more than just a nice bonus.

Edgecombes international work gives the 76ers another layer to think about when it comes to ball distribution and playing time. If his role continues to grow, the team will have to sort out where those minutes come from and how much responsibility he can handle alongside the players already in place, which is exactly the kind of good problem that can make a roster more interesting.
