James Harden has made his feelings clear on where LeBron James should land next, and it’s not Philadelphia.
The former 76ers guard said Friday at Fanatics Fest that he wants James to finish his career in Cleveland, calling it “a perfect storybook finish.” Harden was asked about the possibility of James joining the Cavaliers for the 2026-2027 NBA season and didn’t sound interested in seeing the superstar end up anywhere else.
“I hope he comes to Cleveland. It’s a perfect storybook finish.
At home for his last year. He’s going to decide; he’s smart enough, and I don’t think anybody’s pitch is going to move him.
Wherever he decides, obviously, the team is going to be a lot better,” Harden told a reporter.
The Sixers have been making their own case for James. Mike Gansey spoke with James’ agent, Rich Paul. Bob Myers also made a public pitch on Paul’s podcast with Max Kellerman, and a group of players has reached out as well.
So if Philadelphia misses out, it won’t be because the team didn’t try. But Harden, who left the city with a grudge, would seem to enjoy seeing the Sixers lose out on another major target.
Harden’s own path has taken plenty of turns since forcing his way out of Philly. He spent three seasons with the Los Angeles Clippers after the Sixers sent him there. In 2024-2025, he put himself back in the All-Star conversation by averaging 22.8 points and 8.7 rebounds in 79 games.
The next season began poorly for the Clippers even with Harden playing well, and although the team improved as the year went on, Harden was ready for another change. Los Angeles sent him to the Cavaliers for the final 26 games of the regular season, and he averaged 20.5 points and 7.7 assists.
Harden is now on the free agent market after his deal expired, and the 36-year-old is free to sign with any team. So far, there hasn’t been any movement on his next stop. Even so, he’s still expected to make his return to Cleveland, and his comments about LeBron only reinforce that.
If James does end up in Cleveland, Harden could get the chance to share the floor with him before the end of the legend’s career. And depending on James’ decision, the 76ers might have to deal with a Harden-Mitchell-James combination in 2026-2027.
