Trendon Watford’s next stop could come far from Philadelphia.
The former 76ers forward is now being linked to Valencia Basket, according to BasketNews, after the Sixers declined the $2.8 million team option on his contract for the 2026-2027 NBA season. That decision pushed Watford into free agency a year earlier than expected, and more than a month into the process, the NBA market still hasn’t given him much traction.
If Watford lands with Valencia, he would join a roster that has already added two other American players this offseason. One of them is Mario Saint-Supery, who just finished a stint at Gonzaga.
The other is Mouhamadou Gueye, a 28-year-old who played a few games with the Chicago Bulls last season. Gueye was traded to the Charlotte Hornets a few weeks ago, then waived immediately before making the move to Spain.
Watford’s lone season in Philadelphia started with plenty of interest. The Sixers brought him in during the 2025 offseason as part of a summer that focused heavily on retaining key pieces, and his connection with starting guard Tyrese Maxey gave the move an extra layer of appeal. But the fit never turned into a long-term commitment.
The 25-year-old forward played in 53 games for the Sixers, starting seven, and averaged 16.3 minutes per night. He finished with 6.5 points per game while shooting 51.5% from the field and 20.0% from three. He also averaged 3.3 rebounds and 2.5 assists.
Philadelphia clearly decided the forward spot needed a bigger swing. The team kept Dominick Barlow, then went out and invested in Dean Wade and, eventually, LeBron James. That left Watford on the outside looking in, with little movement on the open market so far.
A stint overseas could give him a chance to reset, play meaningful minutes, and put himself back in front of NBA teams.
