Dwight Howard, the powerhouse center who made waves with the Philadelphia 76ers and the Los Angeles Lakers, has officially hung up his sneakers, announcing his retirement from basketball.
Howard's journey through the NBA was nothing short of remarkable. He graced the court with the Sixers during the 2020-21 season and had two impactful stints with the Lakers in the 2019-20 and 2021-22 seasons.
But that's just a slice of his storied career. Howard also brought his talents to the Orlando Magic, Houston Rockets, Atlanta Hawks, Charlotte Hornets, and Washington Wizards.
His last NBA appearance was with the Lakers in April 2022, marking the end of an era for a player who truly left his mark on the game.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, Howard shared, "… But now I'm taking off the cape and retiring from all basketball to pour into my family and give back to communities worldwide. I know some of you might think I thought he already 'retired' but I didn’t… the game retired me! I still had more left to give."
Reflecting on his 20-year professional career, Howard expressed gratitude while acknowledging the inspiration he drew from players still competing at age 40. Yet, he now feels it's his turn to pass the torch to the next generation.
Howard's legacy is cemented with eight All-Star selections and five All-NBA First-Team honors. Known for his defensive prowess, he was a three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year and earned four All-Defensive First-Team nods.
Leading the league in rebounding five times and in blocks twice, Howard was a force to be reckoned with. He also captured an NBA Championship with the Lakers in 2020 and was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2025.
Spanning nearly two decades, Dwight Howard's career was a testament to his talent and dedication. As he steps away from the game, his influence and contributions will undoubtedly inspire future generations of basketball players.
