Charles Barkley is back in the middle of the NBA’s endless GOAT argument, and this time his answer puts LeBron James at No. 3.
On The Stephen A. Smith Show, Barkley said he has “always told people LeBron is the third-best player I’ve ever seen, behind Michael and Kobe.”
He then doubled down on why he thinks the LeBron conversation gets so heated, saying, “You know, when you’re dealing with LeBron and his Stepford wives, if you don’t say he’s the greatest, it’s like blasphemy. They’re like Stepford Wives.
You have to say he’s the greatest. He can’t be the second.
He can’t be the third. That’s why I call them Stepford Wives; even the men are Stepford Wives.”
Barkley also pointed to what he sees as a key difference between LeBron and Michael Jordan. “So, listen, LeBron’s great, but like I say, my criticism is, I’m like, ‘Yo, man, he always makes sure he has the best players.’ And one of the reasons I always give Michael the advantage is, Michael got his head beat in by the Pistons and the Celtics before he finally said, ‘No, I’m gonna get bigger, stronger, faster.'”
The timing only adds more heat to the discussion. LeBron recently stunned the NBA world by leaving the Los Angeles Lakers and signing with the Philadelphia 76ers, a team already built around Joel Embiid, Jaylen Brown, Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe. That move instantly pushed Philadelphia into the mix of top championship contenders, while also reviving the criticism that LeBron has spent much of his career chasing stacked rosters.
Barkley has been one of the loudest voices making that case. Before LeBron chose Philadelphia, he said that joining either the Warriors or the 76ers would be cheating. After the move became official, Barkley said he wasn’t a fan of the decision, though he also said LeBron still had a chance to strengthen his legacy by winning another title.
What makes this latest take even more Barkley is how often his own rankings seem to shift. Not long ago, he had LeBron seventh on his all-time list.
In another ranking, he left both LeBron and Kobe outside his top five. He even left James off his NBA Mount Rushmore.
Now, though, Barkley has LeBron third, behind Jordan and Kobe. That alone is enough to keep the debate roaring.
And it’s not going away. For plenty of fans, LeBron’s longevity and record-setting career make him the greatest of all time. Others still ride with Jordan’s 6-0 Finals record or Kobe Bryant’s mentality.
Barkley’s stance is clear, though: LeBron belongs among the all-time greats, but not at the top of his list.
