Charles Barkley isn’t budging on LeBron James, and he’s not interested in playing along with the idea that everyone around the Lakers star has to treat him like the unquestioned GOAT.
On The Dan Patrick Show, Barkley went after what he sees as the pressure surrounding LeBron more than LeBron himself. He said he won’t fall into what he called the “Stepford Wives” routine just to keep things smooth with James and the people around him.
“I’m not mad at LeBron. But I’m not going to do the ‘Stepford Wives’ thing like all of LeBron and his friends do, like some of these guys on television now.
I don’t want to upset LeBron because I want him to talk to me or do interviews with me. That’s not how I operate.
LeBron’s a great dude, too. But the people around him and now some guys on television, they’re like Stepford Wives.”
Barkley said the problem, in his view, is the expectation that anyone who doesn’t call LeBron the greatest ever is somehow crossing a line.
“It’s like you have to say LeBron’s the greatest ever or he’s not going to talk to you, and somehow you’re committing treason if you don’t. Like I said, LeBron is the third-greatest basketball player I’ve ever seen. But when you’re around those ‘Stepford Wives’ surrounding LeBron and some people on television are like that, they want to be friends with him.”
He made it clear he still considers himself on good terms with James, even if he won’t move him to the top of his list.
“I think me and LeBron are cool. But I don’t have to say he’s the greatest basketball player ever.
I don’t, man. I don’t think I’m committing treason.”
This wasn’t Barkley’s first time making the same point. Just a few days earlier, while appearing on Stephen A. Smith’s show, he used the same “Stepford Wives” comparison while explaining why he has Jordan and Kobe ahead of LeBron.
“I’m talking about when I watch basketball, and the only difference is Michael and Kobe aren’t nice guys. They’ll kill your ass.
Stephen A., LeBron’s a nice guy. That’s the difference.
And the one thing we all want in sports is killers. Michael and Kobe are bona fide killers.
LeBron is a great, great all-time great, but he’s a nice guy.”
He kept going from there, stressing that the image of Jordan and Bryant was always different from LeBron’s.
“And hey, have you ever said in your wildest dreams, Stephen A., ‘Man, Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant are nice guys?’ That’s something you ain’t never said.
Hey, man, I love LeBron. I ain’t never gonna say anything bad about LeBron.
But LeBron’s a nice guy. He a nice man.
Kobe and Michael? Ain’t nobody ever said, ‘Man, what nice guys Kobe and Michael Jordan were.’
Them boys are killers, man. Plain and simple.”
Barkley’s latest comments come as LeBron’s move to the Philadelphia 76ers continues to fuel debate. The source says James left the Los Angeles Lakers for a Sixers team that includes Joel Embiid, Jaylen Brown and Tyrese Maxey.
That decision immediately reopened the usual arguments around LeBron’s legacy, ring chasing and where he belongs in the all-time conversation.
Barkley has been one of the loudest critics of LeBron’s choice to join teams loaded with stars. Before James made the move, Barkley said publicly that if LeBron signed with the Warriors or the Sixers, it would amount to cheating.
Even after LeBron picked the Sixers, Barkley stuck to his stance. He said another championship or two would be impressive, but it still might not change how he ranks James in the GOAT debate.
Over the years, Barkley has consistently kept LeBron out of the top spot and put Michael Jordan first. At different points, he has ranked LeBron as low as seventh, and in some lists he has left both Kobe and LeBron outside his top five.
Whether fans buy Barkley’s rankings is another matter. The GOAT debate remains one of basketball’s most divisive arguments, with some pointing to LeBron’s longevity, production and all-around game, while others side with Jordan’s Finals record, scoring punch and killer instinct. Kobe’s relentless competitiveness and loyalty to one franchise keep him in the mix, too.
Barkley clearly knows his take won’t please everybody. He just doesn’t seem concerned about that.
What he does seem determined to protect is his right to say LeBron is an all-time great without being pushed to crown him as the greatest ever.
