Tyrese Gibson sent NBA social media into a spin Monday after posting that Allen Iverson had joined the Philadelphia 76ers’ ownership group. The claim spread fast, but it didn’t hold up.
Ben Horney of Front Office Sports reported that Iverson is not part of the 76ers’ ownership or front office. Horney addressed the rumor directly on X, writing: "This viral Instagram post from celeb/R&B singer Tyrese about Allen Iverson joining 76ers ownership is fake news, a source familiar with the matter tells @FOS," the reporter posted on X.
"Tyrese has 19 million Instagram followers and this post has over 80,000 likes. Gotta stay vigilant on the internet."
Reliable NBA insiders did not back up Gibson’s post, and the kind of announcement he described would usually come from names such as Dave McMenamin, Chris Haynes, Shams Charania, and others.
Gibson also said in April 2024 that he and four members of his social media team handle his Instagram account. At the time, the page posted: "Just an FYI if this hasn't been stated Mr Gibson’s social media page is run by Mr Gibson as well as his social media team," the page posted. "2 guys in the US and another 2 guys overseas."
That team may manage the account, but it clearly isn’t built to break NBA news.
Iverson, meanwhile, did make headlines this summer when he reacted to LeBron James joining the 76ers. James left the LA Lakers and signed a two-year, $8 million contract with Philadelphia, a move that made the 76ers the favorites to win the NBA championship next season. James is now paired with Jaylen Brown, Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey.
Iverson talked about the move in July on "The Stephen A. Smith Show" and said, "I'm ecstatic, man," Iverson said.
"I'm just happy for the city of Philadelphia, man. The type of player he is, the type of person he is, I'm just happy, man.
He brings a lot. He really is the answer."
He also acknowledged how tough the transition could be for James, noting the challenge of leaving LA, separating from his family and adjusting to a new place. Even so, the former MVP said he hoped the best for James and the 76ers heading into next season.
