76ers Summer League Breakout Is Suddenly Shaking Up Embiid Insurance

A breakout performance by Johni Broome in the NBA Summer League could shake up the Philadelphia 76ers' roster and intensify the battle for the backup center position.

The NBA Summer League has a way of sneaking up on people, but Johni Broome is making sure the 76ers’ run in Vegas gets noticed.

Through two games, the sophomore big man has been one of Philadelphia’s clearest bright spots. He opened with 19 points and 13 rebounds in a win, then followed that up with 23 points and 11 boards in another victory. That kind of production is hard to ignore, and Broome is starting to look like a player who’s taken a real step forward heading into Year 2.

What makes this interesting for the 76ers is that Broome’s play could push him into a bigger role than expected next season. He didn’t see much action with Philadelphia last year, spending most of his time with the Delaware Blue Coats in the G-League. A late-season injury only made it harder for him to build any momentum inside the organization.

But in Vegas, he’s showing a different version of himself. Broome’s scoring touch has shown up from all three levels, and the rebounding that made him such a touted college prospect has looked even better than advertised. Summer League numbers don’t always carry straight into the regular season, but the early signs are strong.

If that carries into training camp, a few other bigs may have reason to pay attention. Dominick Barlow, Adem Bona, Ariel Hukporti, and Jabari Walker are all in the mix for the chance to become Joel Embiid’s primary backup, but Broome has clearly entered that conversation too.

That kind of competition is exactly the sort of problem the 76ers can live with. Embiid is still expected to miss a considerable number of games by design, so Philadelphia needs options behind him. Broome’s edge is that he can score without needing as much help from the team’s other initiators, which separates him from the other backup bigs fighting for minutes.

Why The Summer Sixers Suddenly Had The Whole NBA Watching

Labaron Philon Jr. and Johni Broome gave the Summer Sixers plenty to talk about in a 2026 NBA Summer League win over the Indiana Pacers, with Philon pouring in 24 points and Broome adding 23 points and 11 rebounds. The broadcast also turned into a bit of a showcase for the organization, as head coach Nick Nurse praised Philons creativity while the game drew attention from Sixers executives and players in the building.

What made the night feel bigger than a typical July game was the crowd around the team and the sense that Philadelphia had more eyes on its summer roster than usual. Jaylen Brown was among those taking in the action, and the mix of established names and young talent gave the Sixers a rare Summer League stage that felt closer to a regular-season event than a developmental tune-up.
