76ers Sloppy Start Is Already Fueling Doubt About Their New Duo

Kwame Brown doesn't hold back as he critiques LeBron James' defense and Joel Embiid's performance following the 76ers' preseason defeat.

Kwame Brown didn’t hold back after the 76ers’ preseason loss to the Nets, using the game to take aim at both LeBron James and Joel Embiid.

Philadelphia dropped a 114-108 decision on Thursday in the first preseason game that had James, Embiid, VJ Edgecombe, Jaylen Brown and Tyrese Maxey all sharing the floor. James put up 10 points, four rebounds and five assists.

Brown scored 18 points and went 7-for-7 at the free-throw line. Maxey finished with 14 points, two rebounds and two assists.

Embiid, though, struggled badly, going for six points on 1-for-5 shooting with eight turnovers.

A day later, Brown posted a video and zeroed in on James’ defense.

"On the defensive end, he walked a little bit, complained about fouls like he normally does," Brown said about James. "That can't work.

He still looks like a defensive liability to me. I was higher on Philly when LeBron was out.

Brown also said James needs to bring more than ball movement, and he wasn’t sold on the four-time champion as a point-forward for Philadelphia.

He had even sharper criticism for Embiid.

"Embiid was abysmal; he had eight turnovers. ... Only six points," he said about Embiid.

"Embiid, we already know he starts (off) slow. You can't really count that in the preseason.

But Embiid is under a microscope."

Brown added that Embiid doesn’t have the luxury of easing into form. In his view, the 76ers star has to make an immediate impact.

James, meanwhile, sounded like a player aware that the group still has a long way to go. For Philadelphia, this is the first time most of the roster has been on the same team with the four-time MVP, with Kentavious Caldwell-Pope the lone exception after three seasons together with the Lakers.

After the loss, James said the chemistry is still a work in progress.

“It’s obviously a small sample size,” he said. “We’re still trying to learn each other on the floor.

We’re still trying to put each other in a position to be successful and complement each other the best way we can out on the floor. It’s going to take some time.”

James also said that playing for the 76ers "felt a little different." He is adjusting to Nick Nurse’s system while getting comfortable with new teammates.

LeBron Just Highlighted Why The Sixers Wanted This Move So Badly

The 76ers added a familiar kind of frontcourt stability when they brought in Dean Wade, betting on the sort of player who can slide into different lineups without forcing a roster reset. Philadelphia gave him a four-year, $38.7 million contract, and the expectation is that he will settle into a meaningful bench role behind the starters, giving the team another option who can help in multiple spots on the floor.

LeBron James recently underscored why the move made so much sense by praising Wades versatility after a preseason look. For a team trying to build a deeper, more adaptable rotation, that kind of endorsement matters because it points to the same trait the Sixers clearly valued: a player who can fit alongside just about anyone and still find ways to impact the game. LeBrons Legacy Debate Just Took A Wild New Turn

Chris Bosh stirred the conversation again with a public salute to LeBron James on Instagram, stacking praise on top of the rsum that has already made James a fixture in every all-time debate. In doing so, Bosh framed a bold path for the future, tying Jamess legacy not just to what he has already done, but to an even stranger next chapter with Philadelphia.

The idea lands with extra force because the 76ers are already being viewed as title favorites for the 2026-27 season, which gives any James-related speculation a built-in stage. Still, the premise runs headfirst into a long-established reality: James has never sounded eager to move into coaching, even as outside voices keep imagining bigger and weirder ways for him to add to his story. V.J. Edgecombe Just Shared What Means Even More Than A Title

V.J. Edgecombe is already drawing attention in Philadelphia as a young piece with real upside, but his latest comments cut well beyond the usual rookie chatter. The Bahamas native made clear that, for him, representing his home country carries a meaning that sits above even the biggest prize in the NBA, a striking sentiment at a time when the 76ers can legitimately think about chasing a title.

Edgecombe has plenty of reasons to dream big in Philadelphia, where the expectations are always high and the path to contention is part of the conversation from the start. Still, his focus on the Bahamas adds another layer to his profile and underscores how much international play can matter to players whose identity is rooted as much in national pride as in league success.
