76ers List Joel Embiid and VJ Edgecombe With Uncertain Game Status

The 76ers face uncertainty ahead of their matchup with the Bulls as key players, including Joel Embiid, deal with injury and illness concerns.

With the Philadelphia 76ers gearing up for their matchup against the Chicago Bulls, all attention is locked in on the team’s injury report - and for good reason. Two key names are listed as questionable: reigning MVP and franchise cornerstone Joel Embiid, and promising rookie VJ Edgecombe.

Let’s start with Embiid. The big man left Philadelphia’s 114-106 loss to the Brooklyn Nets in the third quarter after what appeared to be a scare with his right knee.

Postgame, Embiid clarified that he hyperextended the knee - not ideal, but not catastrophic either. He made his way to the locker room for evaluation and didn’t return to the floor, but his comments afterward suggested a cautious optimism.

“Just hyperextended it,” Embiid said. “Went to the locker room, then they checked it out. We’ll see how it feels.”

That’s the kind of vague-but-hopeful update we’ve come to expect from Embiid, who’s no stranger to managing lower-body issues. The Sixers have him officially listed as “questionable” with right knee injury management, which is standard language for a player who’s both vital to the team’s long-term success and navigating a physically demanding season.

But Embiid didn't stop there - he gave some insight into how his body is holding up overall, and it’s more encouraging than you might expect.

“Feels good. I’m starting to feel better, obviously,” Embiid said.

“Not totally able to heal my body from whatever is going around. But I feel like, body-wise, some of the main issues coming into the season, my body feels pretty good.

I’m moving much better. Offensively and defensively, I’m able to trust myself even more.”

That last point is significant. When Embiid is moving well and trusting his body, he’s one of the most dominant two-way players in the league. And while the Sixers will always err on the side of caution with their superstar, his comments suggest this isn’t a major setback - more like a speed bump on the road to full rhythm.

“The next step is just being consistent, as far as getting game action, and I’ll be back to myself,” he added.

As for Edgecombe, the rookie has been a bright spot for Philly this season, showing flashes of why the organization is excited about his future. He’s also listed as questionable, though his issue isn’t injury-related - he’s battling an illness.

The same goes for Quentin Grimes, who’s also questionable with an unspecified illness. It’s unclear whether it’s the same bug affecting both players, but the Sixers will be monitoring their status closely.

Illnesses can be tricky in terms of timing and recovery, but they’re generally less concerning than structural injuries. Still, with two rotation players potentially sidelined - and Embiid’s status up in the air - the Sixers will need to be ready to adjust on the fly.

Friday’s game against the Bulls might not be a marquee matchup on paper, but for Philadelphia, it’s a pivotal moment in terms of managing health, maintaining momentum, and keeping their eyes on the bigger picture. All eyes will be on the injury report leading into tip-off - and rightly so.
