The Philadelphia 76ers have been one of the more intriguing teams in the NBA this season. At 22-17, they’ve weathered their fair share of ups and downs, including a recent blowout loss at home to the Cavaliers. But even with that stumble, there’s been plenty to like about what they’ve shown through the first half of the season.
Rookie VJ Edgecombe has been a bright spot, flashing the kind of poise and two-way potential that’s rare for a first-year player. And while injuries and load management have made the lineup feel like a rotating door at times, the Sixers are starting to get more consistent appearances from their stars. Joel Embiid and Paul George are both seeing the floor more often, and that alone raises the team’s ceiling in a big way.
With the trade deadline looming, the natural question becomes: Will Daryl Morey make a move?
According to NBA insider Jake Fischer, the Sixers have already dipped their toes into the trade waters, having had discussions with the Memphis Grizzlies back in mid-December. Now, before the rumor mill gets too wild, let’s clear something up: these talks did not involve Ja Morant. While there have been reports that Memphis is open to moving their star point guard, Morant wasn’t part of these particular conversations.
Instead, the discussions were more about “around-the-edges” roster tweaks - the kind of deals that don’t grab headlines but can quietly improve a team’s depth or financial flexibility. Fischer also noted that if Memphis ends up needing a third team to help facilitate a bigger move, Philly could be a logical partner thanks to the groundwork already laid between the two front offices.
So what might that look like for the Sixers?
Right now, Philadelphia could use a bit more help on the wing. Paul George, while still capable of high-level play, isn’t quite the same explosive force he was in his prime.
And Kelly Oubre Jr., who started the season strong, is just now returning from a lengthy injury absence. That leaves the Sixers thin in terms of reliable, two-way wing depth - a critical need for any team with playoff aspirations.
Adding a versatile wing who can defend multiple positions and knock down open shots would go a long way in shoring up the rotation, especially as the team gears up for a postseason push. Whether that help comes via a direct deal with Memphis or as part of a larger, multi-team trade remains to be seen. But the Sixers are clearly active, and Morey isn’t one to stand pat if there’s a move to be made.
For now, the focus shifts back to the court. Philadelphia has a chance to bounce back quickly with a rematch against the Cavaliers on Friday night - same opponent, same venue, and a shot at redemption after a lopsided loss.
Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m. ET at home, and you can bet the Sixers will be looking to make a statement.
Whether or not a trade is on the horizon, one thing’s clear: this team isn’t content with just being good. They’re looking for ways to be great.
