LeBron James’ latest off-court move has drawn criticism from NBA insider Brett Siegel, who questioned the optics of the 41-year-old’s new partnership with Polymarket.
James announced the collaboration on Saturday with a short post that read, “Welcome to Polymarket HQ. Coming soon. In partnership with Polymarket,” James posted.
The partnership comes as James heads into his 24th NBA season, a remarkable milestone for a player who continues to operate at a level few in league history have ever reached. ESPN reported that James will not be back with the Los Angeles Lakers after spending a month as a free agent.
“LeBron James will return for an unprecedented 24th season in the NBA -- but it won't be with the Los Angeles Lakers. James has informed the Lakers that the franchise can move on without him because he will play elsewhere, Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul told ESPN's Shams Charania on Tuesday,” ESPN wrote.
The Philadelphia 76ers have emerged as the team tied to that next chapter after an offseason that started with a major splash. Philadelphia first traded for former Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown, then built a roster that was attractive enough to land James.
Siegel, though, made clear he wasn’t impressed by James’ latest business venture.
“It’s really sad this stuff is being promoted like this,” Siegel wrote.
His criticism fits a pattern. Siegel has also taken issue with players linking up with sports gambling companies before, including when Giannis Antetokounmpo partnered with Kalshi in February.
The league itself has drawn a hard line against sports gambling, with recent situations involving former players, coaches and other personnel underscoring that stance. Even so, active players continue to find opportunities with these companies.
For James, the Polymarket deal is another way to grow his business empire while playing on a smaller contract than he has ever had in his NBA career. Siegel clearly doesn’t like the direction of it, but James keeps adding to his portfolio.

Nick Nurse May Have A 76ers Lineup Problem He Wont Enjoy
The 76ers have spent the offseason adding to a starting group that already had real two-way value, and Dean Wade only sharpens the discussion around how Nick Nurse wants to close games. Wades defensive versatility gives Philadelphia another useful late-game option, especially when matchups tighten and every possession matters.
The problem for Nurse is that there may not be an obvious weak link to remove from the floor. Every current starter brings meaningful defense and impact, which turns the decision into a balancing act between keeping the best lineup on the court and preserving roles that have helped the group function. It is the kind of good problem coaches usually welcome, even if it is not always the easiest one to sort out in crunch time. [Read more 🡒]
LeBron Brought An Off-Court Controversy To Philly Before Camp
LeBron James has managed to stir up a fresh conversation around gambling-adjacent business in the days before camp, and it is landing in a city that knows how quickly basketball noise can spill beyond the floor. A short teaser video on social media announced a partnership with Polymarket, the prediction market platform, and the reaction has been immediate, with plenty of debate over whether an active NBA star should be tied to a product in that space.
The league has already made clear in the past that it has concerns about player-transaction markets, which is why this one is being watched closely even if no discipline is expected. For the 76ers and everyone else trying to get to the basketball part of the preseason, it is another reminder that the NBA calendar rarely starts quietly when one of the sports biggest names decides to make news off the court. Clippers Penalties Are Creating A Draft Problem Fans Should Notice
The ripple effects from the Clippers penalties are now reaching well beyond Los Angeles, and Philadelphia fans have a real reason to pay attention. In the draft-pick web tied to the Jaylen Brown deal, the Celtics control a 2028 first-round swap with the Clippers, and that situation becomes more interesting if the Clippers slide because of the leagues punishment for salary cap circumvention.
Philadelphia also has its own stake in what happens next, thanks to a 2029 top-three protected pick swap with the Clippers from the James Harden trade. With the Clippers expected to drop in the standings, those future picks are looking more valuable as trade assets, even as the bigger question is how much damage the leagues penalties could eventually do to the Clippers roster and the draft position of everyone else connected to them.
