The Rockets may have just handed the 76ers a pretty uncomfortable comparison point for the future of VJ Edgecombe.
Houston and Amen Thompson have agreed to a five-year, $208 million rookie-scale extension, ESPN’s Shams Charania first reported. The deal also includes a 10 percent trade kicker and keeps Thompson tied to the franchise through at least the 2031-32 season. It’s a massive commitment, and one that lands in the same cap territory as All-Star big man Alperen Sengun.
That number matters in Philadelphia because Edgecombe is the kind of young player who could eventually be in that same financial neighborhood. He turned in a highly encouraging rookie season, and the appeal is obvious: a more complete offensive game than Thompson’s and comparable defensive impact. If the market keeps moving the way it just did for Houston, Edgecombe could be looking at a deal of similar size when extension talks arrive.
The catch for the 76ers is that timing could make everything harder. Philadelphia already has major long-term money committed to Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, and Jaylen Brown will surely get his extension in all likelihood. By the time Edgecombe becomes eligible for a new deal, the front office may have to make serious cuts just to create enough room to keep him.
Thompson’s extension is a reminder of what a premium young two-way talent can cost. For the 76ers, that could soon become the price of keeping Edgecombe in the fold.
They’ll almost certainly want to do it. The problem is what it will mean for the rest of the roster and the team’s financial flexibility when the bill comes due.
