Embiid Shines on Iverson Night as Sixers Top Pelicans
Saturday night in Philadelphia wasn’t just another regular-season game-it was a celebration of legacy, and Joel Embiid made sure to rise to the occasion. With Allen Iverson and members of the iconic 2000-01 Sixers squad watching from courtside, Embiid delivered a performance worthy of the moment, leading the Sixers to a 124-114 win over the New Orleans Pelicans.
The night was all about honoring Iverson and the team that made a memorable run to the NBA Finals 25 years ago. That group, led by Iverson’s MVP season and his unforgettable Game 1 masterpiece against the Lakers, still holds a special place in Philly’s heart. And on a night dedicated to that legacy, Embiid did what stars do-he showed out.
In 39 minutes, Embiid poured in 40 points, grabbed 11 boards, dished out four assists, and added two blocks and a steal. He was efficient and assertive, shooting 13-of-27 from the field, knocking down 3-of-5 from deep, and going 11-of-14 at the line. It was his first 40-point game of the season, and it couldn’t have come at a better time.
From the jump, this was a competitive back-and-forth affair. Both teams leaned into the three-ball, trading buckets and momentum swings throughout.
But the second quarter is where the Sixers separated themselves. They outscored the Pelicans 36-21 in that frame, creating just enough breathing room to control the rest of the night.
While Embiid led the charge, he wasn’t alone. Philadelphia had five players score in double figures, a balanced attack that’s becoming a hallmark of their recent stretch.
Kelly Oubre Jr. added a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds, along with four assists. He shot a clean 7-of-13 from the floor and hit three triples.
Tyrese Maxey continued his steady play with 18 points and eight assists, while rookies VJ Edgecombe and Jared McCain chipped in with 15 and 12 points, respectively.
The win moves the Sixers to 27-21 on the season, good for sixth in the Eastern Conference. They’ve now won three straight and are holding off the Magic and Heat in the standings, while staying within striking distance of the Cavaliers and Raptors.
Next up, they’ll head west for a showdown with the Clippers on Feb. 2. But for now, Saturday night was about honoring the past-and Embiid made sure to remind everyone that the present is in pretty good hands, too.
