The Knicks’ title defense will open with a spotlight game, and Jalen Brunson knows exactly what comes with it.
The 2026-27 NBA opening night slate is out, and New York’s first game will also be ring night after the franchise’s first championship in 53 years. Brunson is still enjoying the summer, but he’s already looking ahead to the challenge waiting for the Knicks when they face a revamped 76ers group.
“I’m definitely excited. It’s a new journey for them (the 76ers), for him (LeBron James), and his team,” Brunson told Andrw Korpan of ClutchPoints. “Those dudes definitely have a lot of firepower over there, so we gotta make sure that we’re ready to go.”
That warning fits the way Philadelphia now looks on paper. The Sixers added Tyrese Maxey, LeBron James, Jaylen Brown, Joel Embiid, V.J.
Edgecombe, and Anfernee Simons, giving them one of the deepest and most dangerous rosters in the league. It’s a group with a starting five that can hang with anybody, and Brunson is clearly not brushing that off.
The Knicks, though, have plenty of answers of their own. Brunson is coming off a season in which he averaged 26.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, 6.8 assists, 0.8 steals, and 0.1 blocks per game while shooting 46.7% from the field and 36.9% from three. Karl-Anthony Towns adds size, rebounding, and spacing from the center spot, and he put up 20.1 points, 11.9 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 0.9 steals, and 0.5 blocks per game on 50.1% shooting last season.
On the perimeter, Mikal Bridges and OG Anunoby give New York the kind of wing defense that can make life difficult for Philly’s scorers, even if it means trying to pry the ball away from Maxey or Brown. And in the middle, Joel Embiid’s health remains the swing factor that could tilt the whole night.
There’s also the recent history between these teams. The Knicks swept the 76ers 4-0 last season on their way to the championship, and the matchup is starting to feel like more than just a regular-season date. With both sides loaded, the opener could end up looking like a playoff preview.
For Brunson, the message is simple: the Knicks expect a battle, and they want to walk into it ready.
