The Philadelphia 76ers were already staring at a thin backup-center picture behind Joel Embiid. Now the market may get even tighter.
Phoenix Suns center Mark Williams just had surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder, and ESPN’s Shams Charania reported he’s expected to miss an extended period of time. That injury leaves the Suns in need of center depth, putting them directly in the same lane as the 76ers as both teams look for help up front.
That matters because the pool of available centers is already limited. Free agency doesn’t offer much, and the trade market isn’t exactly overflowing either. Quality big men are hard to find, which is why another team entering the chase only makes things more difficult for Philadelphia.
Williams was a key part of Phoenix’s rotation last season, appearing in 60 games and starting 55. With him sidelined, the Suns will have to lean more heavily on Khaman Maluach and Oso Ighodaro.
Phoenix still has those two on the roster after losing Nick Richards this summer, and both should get plenty of run. Even so, the Suns could still use another body behind them, especially with both players still young.
For the Sixers, the concern is obvious. Behind Embiid, they currently have Ariel Hukporti and Adem Bona. Neither has been a steady NBA backup center, and now they may be asked to carry that role for one of the most injury-plagued centers in NBA history.
That leaves Philadelphia in a risky spot as it tries to compete for a championship this season. The Sixers could look to add more help, but they’re now facing even more competition for whatever center depth remains on the board.
The New York Knicks could also be in the mix, which only adds to the squeeze. For the 76ers, the market just got a little more crowded.
