Chris Bosh didn’t spend much time dressing it up. When he looked at the Philadelphia 76ers’ 2026-2027 outlook, he went straight to the part that matters most.
“For them, the most important thing is figuring out how they're going to play, how they're going to play together, their defensive schemes and offensive schemes,” Bosh told HoopsHype recently.
“Most importantly, the five that are out there on the court and then the team, how are they going to come together? How are they going to share the ball?
How are they going to be solid as a unit moving forward? That's going to be the hard part.
And, hell, like any other team, being healthy, fighting through the ups and downs, that's what it's about.”
That’s the real tension hanging over Philadelphia right now. The front office has taken major swings, and on paper Mike Gansey has put together a group that looks dangerous. But the Sixers are also staring down the same old truth that haunts star-heavy teams: the roster picture is one thing, and the nightly reality is another.
The biggest issue isn’t whether the names are big enough. It’s whether they can function together when the games start counting.
The fit, the ball movement, the defensive and offensive structure - all of it has to click. And then there’s the “one ball theory,” the question of whether too much talent can still create too many problems.
Health sits at the center of everything.
LeBron James has usually been a reliable presence over the course of his career, but the numbers have shifted lately. After back-to-back seasons of at least 70 games, he played 60 games last season. That’s the kind of trend the Sixers will be watching closely.
Jaylen Brown’s recent track record is steady enough to quiet most concerns for now. VJ Edgecombe has only one NBA season under his belt, but he opened his career with 75 games played.
Tyrese Maxey has dealt with his own issues, too. His 2024-2025 season ended after 52 games because of a hand injury, and while he got into 70 games in 2025-2026, he still had to manage a hand-related setback late in the year and came back earlier than expected to aid the playoff push.
Then there’s Joel Embiid, who remains the biggest question of all. Since entering the league in 2016, he has never gone through a season without some notable setback.
He did clear 60 games in four different seasons, but not since 2022-2023. Over the next three seasons, he appeared in 39 games, 19 games, and 38 games.
That’s why the Sixers’ added star power matters so much. It’s not just about loading up the roster - it’s about giving the team some cushion if Embiid again has trouble staying on the floor.
Even so, Philadelphia is still built around him. When Embiid is out there, the Sixers can reach another level, and that’s why the whole group has to be ready to carry the load together.
