Zakee Wheatley Stuns NFL Scouts with Versatile Defensive Skills

Penn State's Zakee Wheatley is leveraging his versatility and honing his skills to make a strong impression in the NFL draft.

Zakee Wheatley has been a standout in Penn State's secondary, earning the nickname “Takeaway King” for his knack for creating turnovers. With nine takeaways to his name, Wheatley has shown a rare ability to always be around the ball.

Originally a cornerback, Wheatley transitioned to safety, and even took on linebacker duties in specific defensive schemes. This versatility is catching the eyes of NFL teams, eager to see how his skills can translate at the next level.

“I see myself as a defensive back through and through,” Wheatley shared. “I’ve played corner, safety, and even stepped into that big nickel role. Teams love my ability to adapt and make plays all over the field.”

Wheatley’s adaptability isn’t his only selling point. He was the sole Penn State player to showcase his skills at both the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine and Penn State Pro Day, running a 4.62-second 40-yard dash at Holuba Hall after opting out of the combine's sprint.

“I felt I could improve on my combine numbers,” Wheatley remarked. “I’ve been training hard, and while I did okay, I knew I could do better.”

Reflecting on his performance, Wheatley expressed satisfaction. “I gave it my all.

I’ve been at this since I was five, and the hard work over the past few months paid off. I’m grateful and eager to keep improving.”

Wheatley aims to join the ranks of recent Penn State safeties like Jaquan Brisker, Ji’Ayir Brown, Kevin Winston Jr., and Jaylen Reed, who have all made their mark in the NFL. His experiences with teammates like Brisker and cornerback Joey Porter Jr. have been invaluable.

“They’re like brothers to me,” Wheatley said. “Since I was a freshman in 2021, we’ve been close. Having their support and advice as I navigate the draft process is huge.”

Wheatley has been dreaming of the NFL since he was two years old, and now that dream is within reach.

“It’s been a journey, full of hard work and sacrifices from me and my family,” Wheatley reflected. “Knowing I’m on the brink of achieving my dream and starting my career is incredibly meaningful.”
