Penn State is putting in serious groundwork on the 2027 recruiting trail, and running backs coach Savon Huggins has been at the center of it. Throughout January, Huggins has been racking up miles across the Northeast, New England, the Carolinas, and deep into the South, checking in on backfield prospects and shaping what’s becoming a key recruiting board for the Nittany Lions.
One name that’s emerged as a priority: Aiden Gibson out of Woodruff, South Carolina. Gibson has been on the radar, but things got more official this week when Penn State extended an offer during an in-home visit that featured not just Huggins, but also offensive coordinator and tight ends coach Taylor Mouser. That kind of two-coach presence tells you all you need to know about how serious Penn State is about Gibson.
The 2027 prospect clearly made an impression, and the feeling was mutual. Gibson has already locked in an official visit to State College for June 12-14, giving him a chance to get a deeper look at the program and the people running it. But before that, he’ll be back on campus in early April for a multi-day visit-another key opportunity for both sides to build that relationship.
For Penn State, this is about more than just adding another name to the list. It’s about building a foundation with a player they believe can be a difference-maker in the backfield. And with Huggins leading the charge, they’re making sure Gibson knows he’s a top priority.
