Rocco Becht's journey with Penn State is off to a unique start. After a challenging season at Iowa State marked by shoulder injuries, Becht is eager to make his mark with the Nittany Lions. Despite setbacks, he’s optimistic about joining spring practice soon, with plans to start throwing in the coming days.
In his recent chat with the media, Becht expressed his determination to participate in more than half of the spring sessions. Penn State's practices kick off next month, culminating in the Blue-White Weekend at Beaver Stadium on April 25.
Last season, Becht endured a torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder and an AC joint sprain in his throwing shoulder. Despite these injuries, he started all 12 games for the Cyclones, completing 205 of 339 passes for 2,584 yards and 16 touchdowns, leading them to an 8-4 record.
Reflecting on his struggles, Becht shared, "It was really hard... probably the lowest place that I've been in my collegiate career, mentally and physically." He credited his family and friends for helping him push through, emphasizing his commitment to his team.
As Becht works his way back, his temporary absence opens up opportunities for other quarterbacks to gain valuable practice reps. Joining him from Iowa State are redshirt freshman Alex Manske, redshirt senior Connor Barry, and freshmen Kase Evans and Peyton Falzone, each eager to make an impact.
Even while sidelined, Becht is stepping up as a leader. "I'm kind of leading everything," he said, detailing how he's guiding teammates through routes and formations. His leadership off the field is proving to be a silver lining, allowing him to grow in new ways.
Becht’s return is crucial for Penn State, not just for installing the offense but also for building chemistry with his new teammates, including fellow Iowa State transfers Chase Sowell, Brett Eskildsen, Benjamin Brahmer, and Gabe Burkle.
Ultimately, Becht is driven by the desire to prove himself. "Getting on the field and playing with your new teammates...
I want them to see me in person and how I operate," he remarked. It’s clear that Becht is ready to showcase his skills and leadership to his new team, and that opportunity is just around the corner.
