Quinton Martin Jr. didn’t need long to make Penn State’s Week 3 decision look overdue.
After being held out of the Nittany Lions’ 27-9 Week 2 win over Temple, the running back finally got his chance against Buffalo and wasted no time flashing why so many Penn State fans had been clamoring for him. On his first carry, he picked up seven yards straight up the middle. One play later, he broke loose for the kind of run that can change a conversation fast: 61 yards down the sideline, through contact and multiple tackles, and straight into the heart of the fanbase’s frustration over how he’d been used.
That reaction came quickly. Penn State fans and media members flooded social media with the same basic message after Martin’s burst set up a red-zone trip that eventually stalled: they had seen enough to wonder why he hadn’t been on the field sooner.
The frustration had been building all week, and not just because Martin sat out Week 2. Offensive coordinator Taylor Mouser and head coach Matt Campbell had already been pressed about his lack of playing time and said he had earned the right to get on the field. When he finally did, he answered in the loudest way possible.
Penn State’s run game has been under the microscope through three weeks, and Hansen has taken the brunt of it. The starter, who was Iowa State’s leading rusher in 2025, has averaged 4.4 yards per carry against what has been a low level of competition.
His longest run this season is 13 yards. James Peoples has mostly handled passing-down work, and in Week 2 even Cam Wallace, who was thought to be fourth on the depth chart, got snaps before Martin.
That made Martin’s emergence feel even sharper. The explosiveness Penn State has been missing showed up immediately, and it showed up in a hurry. Before Martin’s 61-yard dash, Peoples held the longest run of the season with a 16-yard touchdown in the first quarter.
Martin’s burst may not flip the depth chart overnight, and Hansen still has the staff’s trust. But after a run like that, it’s hard to imagine keeping Martin on the sideline much longer. The opening stretch of the season has functioned like a preseason for Penn State, and Week 3 was the last real chance to see whether Martin could become part of the answer in the backfield.
He still has work to do if he’s going to pass Hansen, but the first step was obvious. He gave Penn State fans exactly what they’d been asking for - and he did it in one violent, eye-opening run.
