Penn State got its first real injury picture of the week from Matt Campbell, and the most important takeaway is that safety Jeremiah Cooper looks the closest to making it back.
Campbell, speaking at his first weekly press conference as Penn State’s coach, said Cooper is “probably in the probable category” for Week 1. The safety tore an ACL while playing at Iowa State last September and has been working his way back ever since. Campbell added that Cooper “probably the closest to being able to play this week” after what he called “a really good week and a half of practice.”
The other two injured players are in a tougher spot. Campbell said tight end Gabe Burkle and linebacker Alex Tatsch are “probably on track for Week 2,” and labeled them doubtful for this week. He noted that both are still early in the week, so there is still some time to see where they land, but that was his “best estimation” right now.
Even so, Campbell made clear that all three are back on the field and moving forward.
“I’d say Jeremiah Cooper is probably in the probable category,” he said. “You know, I think his ability to play- he’s probably the closest to being able to play this week.
Has had a really good week and a half of practice… Gabe and Tash are probably on track for Week 2, so I would say they’re doubtful this week. But you know, we’re still early in the week, a little bit to see where they’re at.
But that’s my guess right now, best estimation of where those guys are at. But all three guys are back on the practice field.
All three guys are progressing themselves forward. It’s just making sure they’re absolutely prepared to step back on the field.“
Cooper’s return would matter. When he’s healthy, Campbell said, he’s one of the best defensive backs in the country. Cooper was a first-team All-Big 12 selection in 2023 and followed that with all-conference honorable mention honors in 2024, building a reputation as one of the league’s most dependable defensive backs during his time in Ames.
Campbell was also complimentary about the other two. He called Burkle the “best blocking tight end” in the country and said Tatsch “has got a chance to be one of the great linebackers of all time here.”
