Penn State’s quarterback future was on display in Happy Valley on Saturday, and one of the biggest pieces of it was already in the building.
Four-star commit James Armstrong showed up at Beaver Stadium for Penn State’s Week 1 opener against Marshall, just one day after powering Hopewell High School to a 35-20 win over Chartiers Valley. Armstrong threw for 280 yards and four touchdowns and added 95 rushing yards in the victory, continuing the hot start to his junior season.
That trip to State College fits the moment. Armstrong was already expected to be on hand for a game-day visit in Week 1, but his presence came with extra buzz because of how quickly he has gone from recruiting prize to active recruiter for Matt Campbell’s 2028 class. Penn State has already landed Armstrong and four-star cornerback Deonte Flemings Jr. in that group, and Armstrong has helped build momentum around it.
For Campbell, the in-state recruiting picture has changed quickly. In the 2027 class, he landed only one of Pennsylvania’s top 20 players, according to 247Sports. The 2028 cycle has started much differently, with Armstrong among the early wins.
At 6-foot-3 and 220 pounds, Armstrong is a dual-threat quarterback with serious upside. He is ranked as the No. 10 quarterback in the 247Sports composite and stands as the highest-rated quarterback Campbell has brought in since arriving at Penn State late this offseason. Campbell also flipped former Iowa State commit Kase Evans and later picked up a commitment from 2027 three-star Will Wood, but Armstrong sits above both in the pecking order and could keep climbing as his junior year unfolds.
That’s why his visit matters beyond the optics of a top commit in the stands. Armstrong is already part of the long-range quarterback picture, and the staff’s current setup makes that easy to imagine.
Rocco Becht is QB1 in 2026 and will start Saturday afternoon, while redshirt freshman Alex Manske is positioned as the clear heir apparent. Manske will have three seasons of eligibility after 2026 and is expected to spend that stretch backing up Becht and working in specialized packages in Taylor Mouser’s offense.
If the plan plays out the way Campbell, general manager Derek Hoodjer, and the staff want, Armstrong could eventually slide into that same kind of role. By 2029, when Manske would be in his final year of eligibility, Armstrong would be in Year 2 and ready to step into line behind him before, ideally, taking over the job the following season.
That kind of timeline is almost impossible to map out at most schools. At this one, Campbell has already shown he’s willing to think that far ahead. He enters 2026 with Becht in his fourth season as the starter, and at Iowa State there was only one season between Brock Purdy’s four-year run in Ames and Becht taking over.
