Penn States Losing Streak Just Got Tougher With Another Passing Game Blow

Penn State's hopes to rebound from a losing streak face a major challenge as they take on Purdue without their top receivers, amid a strained lineup riddled with injuries.

Penn State is heading into Saturday’s game against Purdue already short-handed, and the biggest blows are coming at receiver.

The Nittany Lions will be without both of their top pass-catchers, with sophomore Koby Howard set to miss his fifth straight game because of an undisclosed injury and senior Chase Sowell also ruled out, according to the Big Ten’s pregame availability report.

That leaves Penn State trying to snap a four-game losing streak without its two best receiving threats in a game it badly needs to stabilize its season. The Lions are in Beaver Stadium for a matchup with a Purdue team that is struggling, but still dangerous and motivated.

Howard’s absence has lingered for weeks, but Sowell’s status is a fresh hit. He had become Penn State’s top option in the passing game in Howard’s absence and just put together an 11-catch, 151-yard outing in the loss at Michigan. He had also been dealing with minor injuries over the last two games.

The timing is especially rough because Penn State’s offense has been scuffling, and quarterback Rocco Becht will need to make the most of a Purdue defense that ranks among the worst in the country against the pass. The Lions simply do not have much proven depth to absorb losing both receivers at once.

Penn State is dealing with more than a dozen unavailable players for the game, but the receiver losses stand out the most. The Lions are also hoping to get backup linebacker Cam Smith back and add former safety Marcus Neal, Jr., to help a thin linebacker group that has been stretched even further by the season-ending injury to promising sophomore Alex Tatsch.

Tatsch will miss the rest of the year, leaving Penn State with only three primary linebackers after his injury.

There are also several players listed as game-time decisions: starting defensive end Yvan Kemajou, tight end Brian Kortovich and defensive tackle Amstrong Nnodim.

Penn State’s unavailable list for Purdue includes Howard, Sowell, Tatsch, defensive ends Max Granville and Mason Robinson, offensive lineman Will Thompkins, cornerbacks Tyler Armstead, Josh Johnson and Christian Askew, defensive tackles Liam Andrews and Alijah Carnell, safety Omarion Davis, tight end Cooper Alexander and kickoff specialist Cristiano Rosa.

The Lions are 3-4 overall and 0-4 in the Big Ten. Purdue is 3-4 and 2-2. Both teams are looking for a win that can help salvage disappointing seasons and keep some kind of postseason push alive.

Saquon Barkleys Eagles Future Suddenly Feels Bigger Than Just This Week

Saquon Barkley was back on the practice field Friday, a welcome sign for an Eagles offense that has had to manage his hamstring and back injuries in recent weeks. He is expected to play against the Commanders, and even with his workload limited lately, Barkley remains one of the teams most important voices and most recognizable presences.

The bigger backdrop is the NFL trade deadline, which has naturally pushed any Barkley conversation beyond just Sundays availability. For now, there have been no confirmed transactions involving him, but his status has become part of a larger conversation about where the Eagles stand and what they may still want to do before the deadline passes. Penn State Showed The Fight Fans Have Been Waiting To See

Penn State finally showed some of the resilience its fans have been waiting to see, digging out of an early hole and hanging with Minnesota all the way through a tense night at 3M Arena at Mariucci. The Nittany Lions battled to a 1-1 tie in regulation and overtime before pulling out a 2-1 shootout win, a result that offered a much-needed lift after a slow start to the season.

Justin Poirier delivered the equalizer in the third period, and Josh Fleming was steady throughout with 35 saves, including key stops when the game tightened in overtime and the shootout. The win moved Penn State to 2-4-1, and while it was only one result, it looked like the kind of effort that can start to change the conversation around this group. [Read more 🡒]

Penn State Offense Faces New Pressure As Purdue Visit Brings Extra Stakes

Penn State heads into its visit to Purdue with a little more than the usual conference urgency, and Matt Campbells group is still searching for its first Big Ten win of the season. The Nittany Lions are favored, but the setting adds a layer of pressure as the offense tries to steady itself and keep pace in a league race that has already put them behind the curve.

Receiver Koby Howards return from injury was downgraded to doubtful, while Chase Sowell remains questionable but active, leaving the receiving picture unsettled as the game approaches. Penn State will also take a moment to honor former running back Ki-Jana Carter for his College Football Hall of Fame induction, a fitting nod to the programs history on a day when the current team is trying to create some needed momentum of its own.
