Penn State’s season has already shifted from playoff dreams to bowl-season math, and the projections are starting to stack up. The Nittany Lions sit at 4-4, need two more wins to lock up bowl eligibility, and ESPN’s College Football Power Index gives them a 96.9-percent chance to get there. It also gives them a 33.7-percent shot at winning out.
That leaves Penn State in the middle of a wide-open bowl picture, with possibilities stretching from Dallas to Birmingham and even a trip to a game before Christmas. The Nittany Lions have not missed the postseason outright since 2024, though they opted out with a 5-6 record in 2020.
One of the most common landing spots is the Duke’s Mayo Bowl, and it comes with a few different twists. Sports Illustrated’s Bryan Fisher has Penn State facing North Carolina and Bill Belichick in the Dec. 26 game, while ESPN’s Kyle Bonagura projects a rematch with Clemson in Charlotte.
That Clemson matchup would be a surprise. Penn State beat the Tigers in the Pinstripe Bowl last December at Yankee Stadium, and bowl committees and conferences generally try to avoid rematches, especially when teams have three or four losses.
Even so, Charlotte remains a realistic destination. Penn State has never played in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl before, and the East Coast location would be manageable for fans, even with the awkward timing one day after Christmas.
If Penn State does end up in Dallas, there’s a familiar history there. The Nittany Lions played in what was then called the TicketCity Bowl in 2011, and Houston’s Case Keenum lit them up in a 30-14 win over interim head coach Tom Bradley. Keenum finished 45-for-69 for 532 yards and three touchdowns.
ESPN’s Mark Schlabach has Penn State meeting North Texas in that Dallas slot, with the Mean Green sitting at 6-2. Athlon Sports has the Nittany Lions in the First Responder Bowl against Baylor.
Brett McMurphy of On3, one of the most respected bowl predictors in the business, has Penn State in the Birmingham Bowl against UCF in a matchup of at-large teams. That bowl is tied to the American Athletic Conference, which could also bring teams like UTSA, Memphis or South Florida into the mix. It’s not the cleanest fit for Penn State, but it’s still on the board.
Then there’s the long shot that stands out the most. CBS Sports has Penn State headed to the Grand Strand to face Arkansas State from the Sun Belt. That would be a before-Christmas bowl, something Penn State hasn’t played since the 1979 Liberty Bowl in Memphis.
That kind of placement would be unusual for an at-large team, and Penn State would most likely need to finish 6-6 for it to happen. But if the Nittany Lions get to six wins, they could still be in play for several different bowls.
For now, the focus shifts to Saturday at Washington, where Penn State will face the Huskies in Seattle for the first time since 1921.

Penn State Players Just Got Pat Krafts Message Before Washington
Penn State players walked into a familiar kind of week with a new reminder from above. In the wake of James Franklins firing, athletic director Pat Kraft gave the team Own the outcome T-shirts, a simple message meant to keep the focus on what comes next as the Nittany Lions prepare for Washington.
Kraft has been unusually visible around the football program, showing up at games and making his support for players hard to miss. With the season moving on and the next test already waiting, the message was less about the past than the responsibility that still sits in front of the locker room. [Read more 🡒]
Penn State Could Still Shape The CFP Race In A Frustrating Way
Penn States season has already taken a sharp turn from the expectations that followed an AP preseason ranking of No. 18. A four-game losing streak pushed the Nittany Lions to 4-4 before they steadied themselves with a win over Purdue in Week 9, and now the path ahead looks a little more manageable than the one they just navigated.
That softer finish matters beyond State College, because an 8-4 Penn State team could still end up shaping the College Football Playoff conversation in a frustrating way. USC, ranked No. 20 in the first CFP rankings, has its own rsum-building stretch ahead with games against Indiana and UCLA, and a 9-3 Trojans finish would look a lot better if it includes a win over Penn State. Penn State Still Has A Koby Howard Problem Fans Didn't Expect
Koby Howards season has become one of the quieter frustrations around Penn State, and it is starting to linger well past the point when anyone expected a second-year wide receiver to be back in the mix. Howard has been sidelined since Week 3 with an undisclosed injury, and by Week 10 he still had not returned to game action. Head coach Matt Campbell has said Howards work in practice has been very limited, which is never a promising sign this far into the fall.
The uncertainty is the part that stings most for Penn State, because this is no longer a short-term absence with a clean timetable attached. Howard has been listed as questionable for upcoming games, but the available signs point to a recovery that is moving slowly, if it is moving at all. For a team that expected to have him available by now, the wait has turned into a real roster concern. [Read more 🡒]
