Penn State’s 2027 class already has two commits making noise deep into their senior seasons, and both are giving the Nittany Lions plenty to feel good about.
Running back Chukwuma Odoh and cornerback Kei'Shjuan Telfair have each kept their stock climbing in high school play, and their latest performances are exactly the kind of tape that keeps a recruiting staff locked in. Odoh, a top-50 back in the 247Sports running back rankings, has been a standout at Paramus (N.J.)
Catholic High School, a program that routinely churns out Power Conference talent. Telfair, meanwhile, has continued to show why he became such an important piece of Penn State’s 2027 haul.
Odoh’s most recent outing came against The Hun School of Princeton, where he piled up 116 yards and a touchdown on 18 touches. That performance helped keep him in the spotlight, but it’s been the broader body of work that has made him one of the region’s most impressive backs. He’s averaging more than seven yards per carry this season, and his production has matched the hype around him since he first broke out as a sophomore with more than 1,400 rushing yards.
Penn State got involved early, and Odoh committed in May after being on the radar of running backs coach Savon Huggins for a long time. Odoh pointed to the program’s history and Huggins’ development track when explaining his decision.
"The school has had a great history with running backs throughout the year," Odoh told 247Sports regarding his decision. "With Savon, I feel like he can develop me and get me to where I want to be.
At 6-foot and 220 pounds, Odoh brings a powerful frame and enough burst to separate, with a 100-meter time in the 10.8-second range. His ceiling has been a major talking point for Penn State sources since the offer went out in early March.
Tyler Calvaruso wrote in his post-commitment scouting report that Odoh dealt with nagging injuries as a junior but was back at full strength when the New Jersey Non-Public B playoffs arrived. In those postseason games, he opened with nine carries for 179 yards and five touchdowns in a win over Immaculata, then followed with 301 yards and three touchdowns against Red Bank Catholic.
Telfair’s path to Penn State has been just as notable. The Euclid (Ohio) High School standout is ranked third among Penn State’s commits in the 247Sports class rankings, sitting 116th overall and 13th among cornerbacks. He chose the Nittany Lions in April after fielding more than 40 scholarship offers, giving Penn State another blue-chip defensive back for Terry Smith’s room.
Even though cornerback is where he projects long term, Telfair showed off his versatility in a 32-10 win over Shaker Heights High School, scoring four touchdowns. He ran for three of them and added another on a punt return, a reminder that his game stretches beyond just coverage ability. Calvaruso noted that range and raised the possibility of future usage in other areas during Telfair’s college career.
Penn State’s connection with Telfair was built early, and he made clear that Terry Smith played a central role in the recruitment.
"My relationship with coach Terry is great," Telfair told Lions247 regarding how Penn State climbed in his recruitment. "He's the one who came in, the first guy my sophomore year and gave me the offer. He played a really big part because when they didn't have a head coach and that situation, he was still recruiting me when he had stuff going on."

Penn State Fans Have Another Saquon Barkley Reason To Be Miserable
Saquon Barkleys latest exit from a game with the Rams was the kind of sight that makes Penn State fans wince, because it came with an apparent hamstring injury and no return to action after the first quarter. For a player whose career has already included a major ACL tear in 2020, any lower-body issue carries extra weight, especially when it involves a part of the body that can linger for weeks before a running back is truly back to full speed.
For Penn State, the timing only adds to the unease. The Nittany Lions are already staring at a difficult stretch ahead with USC and Michigan on the schedule, and recent losses have left the seasons outlook cloudy. Losing even the conversation around one of the programs most recognizable stars to another injury scare is the sort of development that keeps the mood around State College uneasy, even before the next kickoff arrives. Penn State Already Has A Problem Fans Didn't Expect
Penn States early-season picture has changed fast, and not in the way fans expected when a new era began under Matt Campbell. By Week 5, the Nittany Lions were already dealing with back-to-back losses, a jarring turn for a program that entered the fall with far more optimism than this.
The setback lands in a week packed with head-turning college football moments elsewhere, from South Carolinas collapse against Kentucky to Michigans offensive trouble after losing to Iowa. Even the broader sport has been in motion, with Foxs Big Noon Kickoff and Barstool Sports parting ways, but for Penn State the focus is closer to home now, where the pressure is already building and the questions around this team are starting to pile up. Penn State Suddenly Has A Credibility Problem Fans Can't Ignore
Penn States rough stretch has turned what looked like a promising season into a much tougher sell. The 34-13 loss to Northwestern sent the Nittany Lions out of the Coaches Poll entirely, a sharp fall for a program that opened the year ranked and expected to stay in the national picture under new coach Matt Campbell.
The schedule does not offer much time to linger on the setback. USC and Michigan are next, and those matchups will give Penn State a chance to reestablish itself against high-profile opponents and climb back toward the top 25, but only if the Nittany Lions start looking like a different team than the one that just slipped against Northwestern.
