Penn State Wrestling Stuns With Perfect Opening at NCAA Championships

Penn State's wrestling team showcases their dominance at the NCAA Championships with a flawless opening, setting the stage for potential glory.

Penn State wrestling made a powerful statement at the NCAA Wrestling Championships, winning all 10 of its opening matches in a spectacular display of dominance. The Nittany Lions didn't just win; they did so with authority, racking up eight bonus-point victories to take the early lead in the team standings.

Freshman sensation PJ Duke and seasoned senior Levi Haines were the stars of the show, each securing rapid pins in their matches. It took them less than two minutes to make their mark, setting the tone for what could be one of the most impressive opening sessions in recent championship history.

Competing at the Rocket Arena, Coach Cael Sanderson's squad executed their game plan to near perfection. With a commanding 22.5 points, they surged ahead of their closest competitors: Iowa (15), Ohio State (14.5), Iowa State (14), and Oklahoma State (13.5).

While last year's team went 20-0 in the first two rounds, setting a record with 177 team points, this year's squad is showing they're ready to carve their own path. They kicked things off with a major decision, five technical falls, and those electrifying pins from Duke and Haines. Heavyweight Cole Mirasola came close to adding another bonus-point win but settled for a solid 13-7 victory.

The tech falls were delivered by Marcus Blaze at 133 pounds, Shayne Van Ness at 149, Mitchell Mesenbrink at 165, Rocco Welsh at 184, and Josh Barr at 197. Barr, in particular, continued his impeccable season, improving to 20-0 with his 11th technical fall. His relentless performance against Blake Schaffer of Kent State included six takedowns and an impressive 3:39 of riding time.

Both Barr and Mesenbrink have maintained their perfect bonus-point streaks, underscoring the depth and talent of this Penn State lineup. As the tournament progresses, the Nittany Lions are clearly the team to watch, with their eyes set on another historic run.
