The Penn State Nittany Lions are making waves at the 2026 NCAA Wrestling Championships, with eight wrestlers advancing to the quarterfinals. As the top-ranked team, they’re living up to expectations with standout performances across the board.
Among those moving forward, we have No. 1 seeds like Luke Lilledahl, who showcased his skills with an 11-2 major decision over Missouri's Mack Mauger. He then edged out West Virginia's Jett Strickenberger in a tight 4-2 decision, setting up a quarterfinal clash with Iowa's Dean Peterson.
Marcus Blaze was on fire, registering two technical falls. He dominated Oregon State's Gabe Whisenhunt and Missouri's Gage Walker, both by 17-2 scores. Blaze now prepares to face Iowa's Drake Ayala.
Shayne Van Ness was another standout, securing a technical fall against Brown's Austin McBurney and a swift pin over Iowa State's Jacob Frost. His next challenge is Oklahoma State's Casey Swiderski.
PJ Duke was nothing short of spectacular, pinning both his opponents. He dispatched Morgan State's Yannis Charles in just 1:56 and Wisconsin's Luke Mechler in 1:38. Duke will meet Ohio State's Brandon Cannon in the quarters.
Mitchell Mesenbrink continued the Penn State dominance with a 21-5 technical fall over Drexel's Cody Walsh and a 12-0 major decision against Ohio State's Paddy Gallagher. His quarterfinal opponent is North Carolina's Bryce Hepner.
Levi Haines was in top form, adding a fall and a technical fall to his record. He defeated Bellarmine's Grant O'Dell in just 1:33 and Columbia's Nick Fine by a 21-5 technical fall. Haines is set to wrestle Michigan's Beau Mantanona next.
Rocco Welsh and Josh Barr also punched their tickets to the quarterfinals. Welsh took down Utah Valley's Caleb Uhlenhopp with a 19-4 technical fall and Lehigh's Rylan Rogers with a 13-4 major decision.
He faces Nebraska's Silas Allred next. Barr, meanwhile, dominated Kent State's Blake Schaffer with a 20-1 technical fall and Bucknell's Dillon Bechtold with an 11-3 major decision.
Barr's next opponent is Stanford's Angelo Posada.
Not every Nittany Lion advanced, though. Braeden Davis and Cole Mirasola are heading to the consolation rounds.
Davis moved forward with a 2-0 decision over Utah State's Henry Drury but fell to Nebraska's Brock Hardy in a 9-4 decision. Mirasola advanced past Duke's Connor Barker with a 13-7 decision but was stopped by Iowa's Ben Kueter in a 4-0 decision.
Mirasola faces Appalachian State's Stephan Monchery next.
With their eyes set on the prize, these Nittany Lions are proving why they’re the team to beat. Stay tuned as they continue their quest for championship glory.
