Penn State wrestling continues to assert its dominance on the national stage, and the addition of Elijah Brown only strengthens their powerhouse status. Brown, a standout Class of 2026 recruit, has shifted his allegiance from Pittsburgh to the Nittany Lions for the 2026-27 season. Coming off a stellar high school career, Brown capped it with a second consecutive PIAA Class 3A title in the 215-pound category, boasting an impressive 173-20 overall record and a 94-2 run over the past two years.
Reflecting on his journey, Brown expressed his excitement about joining Penn State, saying, “This was a great way to end the season and my [high school] career. And I’m just so excited for Penn State and everything that comes with that.”
A native of Pittsburgh, Brown had his sights set on bigger collegiate ambitions. After stepping back from his commitment to Pittsburgh in October, he quickly found his place in head coach Cael Sanderson's elite recruiting class.
Brown remarked, “As the days and weeks went on, I just started to have higher aspirations and higher goals. If I want to be the best, I have to go where the best wrestlers are.
So that automatically put Penn State at the top of my list. I love the staff.
I love just everything about it.”
While Sanderson’s squad isn’t losing many wrestlers after the 2025-26 season, Brown's arrival is set to intensify competition, particularly in the 197-pound or heavyweight divisions. The 197-pound class currently features sophomore Josh Barr, who is expected to hold his ground as a key player for the Nittany Lions.
Should Brown transition to the 285-pound class, he’ll face off against Cole Mirasola, ranked ninth in the NCAA Tournament for Penn State. Mirasola has demonstrated his potential with significant victories, including an upset against Ohio State’s Nick Feldman.
However, consistency is key, and Brown’s presence could provide the spark needed to elevate Mirasola's game. If Mirasola doesn’t step up, Sanderson can confidently turn to Brown to make an impact on the mat.
With Brown's commitment, Penn State continues to build a formidable lineup, ensuring their legacy of excellence in collegiate wrestling remains unchallenged.
