Penn State Suddenly Has A Quarterback Question It Can't Ignore

Penn State's narrow loss to Michigan raises questions about the quarterback position and future team strategy.

Penn State walked out of Ann Arbor with another painful Big Ten loss Saturday, dropping a 21-18 decision to Michigan and sliding to 3-4 after a 3-0 start. It was the Nittany Lions’ fourth straight conference defeat, and the game left the same nagging question hanging over the offense: the playmakers are doing enough, but the quarterback situation is dragging everything down.

There were at least a few encouraging signs in the passing game. Against what was described as a really good Michigan defense, Penn State was able to move the ball through the air, with its wide receivers and tight ends stepping up when Rocco Becht put the ball in the right spots. The offense still lacked much overall life, but the aerial attack showed enough to suggest there’s something to build on.

Chase Sowell was the clearest bright spot. In Koby Howard’s absence, he has become a bigger piece of the offense, and he backed up his strong performance against USC with 11 catches for 151 yards against Michigan.

Even in a game against one of the best defenses Penn State will see the rest of the way, Sowell kept finding space and getting open. If Howard is able to return against Purdue after the bye week, Penn State could suddenly have two legitimate No. 1 receivers.

The issue is that the quarterback play keeps short-circuiting the good moments. Michigan made a change at quarterback during the game and immediately got a lift, while Penn State stayed with Becht even as he hurt the team repeatedly.

Matt Campbell remains loyal to him, but Becht’s second half was costly, with two interceptions and a fumble that all led to Michigan touchdowns. Those mistakes were too much to survive, especially with the rest of the passing game showing it can function.

At this point, the case for a switch is getting stronger. Alex Manske may not have much experience, but the bar Becht has set over the last several weeks is low enough that Penn State has to at least consider the move. The bye week gives Campbell a clean opportunity to make a change and get Manske some valuable reps.

And with the season slipping, the bigger-picture conversation is hard to avoid. Penn State is 0-4 in conference play, and its bowl hopes keep shrinking with every loss.

There may not be much left to chase in the standings, which makes this the moment to look ahead. Campbell should lean into next season, play younger pieces, and see what Manske can do with a receiver group that has already shown it can help him.

Penn State Fans Got A Court Decision They Will Have Strong Feelings About

A Centre County judge has declined to ease a parole restriction that keeps Braeden A. Phillips away from Penn State football games and wrestling matches, a decision that will resonate with plenty of fans who have followed the case. Judge Brian Marshall denied Phillips request to loosen the condition, which bars him from attending those events as part of the terms tied to his release.

Phillips pleaded guilty to making violent threats against State College Area High School and must stay at least 100 feet away from Penn State and other schools under his parole conditions. Marshall did leave the door open to a future request for a modification, but for now the restriction remains in place. [Read more 🡒]

Penn State Fans Just Got A New Twist In The Kayne Clary Saga

Kayne Clarys legal fight with Penn State has come to an abrupt halt, at least for now. The former Nittany Lions basketball captain has discontinued his federal defamation and unjust enrichment lawsuit against the university, coach Mike Rhoades and others, ending a case that had accused the program of intimidation, retaliation, slander and illegal use of his Name, Image and Likeness.

The move comes during the discovery stage, before the case had reached a courtroom test of those claims. Clary was suspended and dismissed from the team before moving on to Mississippi State and then Oklahoma State, and the latest development leaves Penn State with one less off-court issue to navigate even as the circumstances around his departure still linger in the background. Penn State Gets Encouraging Sign Before Tough Michigan Trip

Penn State heads into Ann Arbor with a familiar challenge in front of it, and the latest injury report at least gives both sides a clearer picture of who will be available for a game with real weight. The Nittany Lions are still dealing with several players sidelined, including some season-ending injuries, as they prepare for a matchup at the Big House, where their recent track record has not been kind.

Michigans report adds another layer of uncertainty, with two defensive ends listed as questionable ahead of kickoff. For Penn State, any edge matters on a trip that has not gone well lately, and the availability of a few key players could help shape whether this becomes another tough afternoon in Ann Arbor or a chance to finally change the feel of the series.
