Penn State finished off its 28-25 win over Washington in Seattle on Saturday without one of its most important linemen, and afterward coach Matt Campbell explained why starting left tackle Malachi Goodman didn’t play the second half.
Goodman was in the lineup to start the game, as expected. But after halftime, Garrett Sexton took over at left tackle and handled the rest of the night.
Campbell said the decision came down to Goodman’s health, not anything tied to his performance.
“Really, that was kind of what went into that with Malachi: he was not at full strength, and you know, I think we knew he would be able to give us some, how much could he give us, and Garrett really had a great day of practice. So I thought of Garrett; I thought he did a really good job.
I think it would be great to watch the videotape, but it wasn’t anything Malachi did. It was just his physical health.“
That was a notable loss for Penn State’s offense. Goodman, a redshirt freshman, had started all eight games entering the Washington matchup and, according to Pro Football Focus, had logged more snaps than anyone else on the offense at 505. His pass-blocking efficiency rating sat at 97.4, and he had allowed just 13 pressures and 11 hurries across those snaps.
Sexton was the next man up, though his workload had been much lighter before Saturday. He had played only 45 snaps this season, including 14 in Big Ten games.
Whether Goodman will be ready for Penn State’s next game is still unclear. The Nittany Lions return home to face Minnesota at Beaver Stadium on Saturday, Nov.
- Kickoff is set for 7 or 7:30 p.m. on a network still to be determined.

Penn State Just Lost A Chance Fans Desperately Wanted
Minnesotas loss to UCLA changed the backdrop for Penn States next trip into Big Ten play, because the Golden Gophers no longer arrive with the kind of ranked profile that would have made the matchup feel even bigger. UCLA stayed unbeaten and moved to 9-0, while Penn State, under first-year coach Matt Campbell, is still trying to steady a season that has gone sideways in league play with a 1-4 Big Ten mark.
The timing adds another layer because Minnesota had been one of the teams fans were eyeing as a possible measuring stick, and the game now looks a little different without that ranking attached. UCLA coach Bob Chesney also has a Penn State connection of his own, having been a candidate for the job before Campbell was hired, which only deepens the sense that the coaching carousel around this program keeps circling back into the conversation. Penn State Fans Suddenly Face A Scary Jack Ham Situation
Jack Hams familiar voice was missing from Penn States radio broadcast Saturday after the longtime color commentator and former NFL linebacker experienced a medical emergency in Seattle before the Nittany Lions game against Washington. He was transported to the University of Washington Medical Center for treatment, leaving an abrupt and unsettling note hanging over a day that was supposed to be about football.
For Penn State fans, Ham has been part of the soundtrack for years, and his absence was felt immediately around the matchup. No further information about his condition has been released, which leaves the situation unresolved for now and makes the concern around one of the programs most recognizable figures all the more real. Penn State Suddenly Faces A Bigger Koby Howard Concern
Penn States receiver room has already had to adjust without Koby Howard for more than a month, and the latest update only deepens the uncertainty around his status. Howard has been officially ruled out for Week 10 after the injury he suffered in the Week 3 game against Buffalo, extending a stretch that has now reached six straight missed games.
Howard did undergo surgery, and head coach Matt Campbell has said he is ahead of schedule in his recovery, but there still is no clear timeline for when he might be back. The bigger question now is not just when Penn State gets him back, but whether the Nittany Lions will see him again at all this season. [Read more 🡒]
