Penn State’s offense is suddenly staring at a different kind of test heading into Saturday’s Big Ten opener against Wisconsin. Koby Howard, who had been piling up production at a level the Nittany Lions haven’t seen from a receiver since Jahan Dotson’s 2021 All-American run, will not be available and is expected to miss an extended stretch.
Head coach Matt Campbell made that much clear on Wednesday.
"It's not season-ending, but it will be an extended period of time," Nittany Lions head coach Matt Campbell said on Wednesday regarding an unspecified injury. "I will do a great job as we get closer to his return to play, letting you know certainly when he'll be back."
The timing hurts because Howard had already established himself as one of the country’s most dangerous non-conference playmakers. Through three weeks of the 2026 season, he had 12 catches, averaged nearly 29 yards per reception, scored three total touchdowns and even added a 20-yard run last Saturday. It was the kind of early sophomore surge that can change the feel of an offense.
Campbell said the setback has been especially tough for Howard, who put in the work to get to this point.
"I think that's probably more so the disappointing part of it for him, is just knowing how hard he's worked," Campbell said. "And the reality is he'll work just as hard to get back and better than ever."
Even with the loss, there’s confidence inside the program that Penn State can absorb it. Defensive back Jeremiah Cooper pointed to the depth in the receiver room and made it clear the belief is still there.
"I know there are dudes that are really gonna bring that (receiver) room up," defensive back Jeremiah Cooper said on Wednesday. "It sucks to lose Koby, but it's next man up and I have full confidence in that room because I've seen the whole year doing their thing. So I can't wait to see them ball."
Receiver Brett Eskildsen echoed that same message, saying the group is ready to handle the load while Howard is out.
"We're gonna do everything we can to hold it down, and look forward to having him back," receiver Brett Eskildsen said.
With Howard sidelined, Penn State’s challenge now is broader than simply finding one replacement. The receiver rotation has to adjust, and the offense as a whole will be asked to cover for one of its most explosive pieces until he returns.
