In a hard-fought battle at Chicago’s United Center, Penn State's season came to a close with a 76-66 loss to Northwestern. This Big Ten Tournament matchup marked the end for the Nittany Lions, who were seeded at the bottom in the new 18-team format.
Penn State’s starting lineup featured Kayden Mingo and Dom Stewart in the backcourt, with Ivan Jurić and Josh Reed holding down the forward positions. Freshman Mason Blackwood made his collegiate starting debut, adding a fresh dynamic to the team.
On the opposing side, Northwestern leaned heavily on their star, Nick Martinelli, a key player in their offensive strategy. Both teams exchanged blows early, finding themselves tied at 12 points after just five minutes. Jurić was a force inside, scoring four of Penn State's initial buckets and outpacing Martinelli, who had seven points despite his top-five Big Ten scoring status.
The game saw a seesaw of scoring, with contributions from both benches. Freddie Dilione V provided a brief spark for Penn State with back-to-back scores, although his impact was short-lived. As the first half wound down, freshman guard Melih Tunca hit a crucial three-pointer to tie the game at 26, but Martinelli quickly answered, pushing Northwestern ahead by halftime, 34-32.
Martinelli led all scorers at the break with 13 points, closely followed by Jurić with 12. While both teams shot efficiently, Penn State excelled from beyond the arc, hitting 50% of their threes compared to Northwestern’s lower clip. However, the Wildcats capitalized on their rebounding edge and fewer turnovers.
The second half mirrored the first in intensity. Mingo’s and-one play was immediately countered by a Martinelli three-pointer, maintaining Northwestern's slim lead. Penn State’s defense held strong at times, but Martinelli continued to find opportunities, including a pivotal offensive rebound and putback.
Midway through the second half, Northwestern extended their lead to 56-49, despite Jurić’s efforts, which included a powerful slam to reach his career-high 20 points. However, foul trouble sent him to the bench, stalling Penn State’s momentum.
Without Jurić, Penn State's offense struggled. Turnovers and missed opportunities allowed Northwestern to stretch their lead. Despite their efforts to rally, including a valiant push in the final minutes, the Nittany Lions couldn’t overcome the deficit.
Jurić ended the night with 22 points, leading Penn State’s scoring, followed by Reed, Mingo, and Dilione, who also reached double figures. Martinelli topped all scorers with 24 points, supported by Jayden Reid’s 14 for Northwestern.
Penn State shot 51% from the field and 43% from three-point range, but their 17 turnovers and 22 rebounds were overshadowed by Northwestern’s 28 rebounds and 24 points off turnovers. It was a tough end to the season for Penn State, as Northwestern advanced, showcasing resilience and execution in key moments.
