Penn State Recruiting Just Took Another Hit On Defense

As Penn State faces a recruiting setback, a promising linebacker chooses to stay closer to home, strengthening Wisconsin's future lineup.

Penn State’s 2027 recruiting class took another blow Sunday when three-star linebacker Blake Betton switched his commitment from the Nittany Lions to Wisconsin, according to 247Sports.

Betton, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound prospect from Shakopee, Minnesota, had been pledged to Penn State since April 11. Instead of heading to Happy Valley, he decided to stay closer to home and sign on with Luke Fickell’s Badgers.

The move stings for Penn State head coach Matt Campbell, who targeted Betton early after arriving in Happy Valley last December. Campbell and Betton already had familiarity from Campbell’s time at Iowa State, a connection that helped Penn State land his commitment earlier this year.

Betton’s profile helps explain why the flip matters. Rivals Industry Rankings list him as the No. 40 linebacker nationally and the No. 4 prospect in Minnesota. Rivals also rates him as a four-star recruit and the country’s No. 27 linebacker, while 247Sports has him at an 88 rating.

He backed up that buzz with production at Shakopee last season, piling up 88 tackles, four tackles for loss, two interceptions, four pass breakups and a fumble recovery during his junior year.

His ability to line up in multiple spots made him a useful piece for Penn State’s future linebacker group, but the Nittany Lions now have work to do. Oklahoma native Case Alexander is the lone linebacker still committed in Penn State’s 2027 class.

Betton’s flip also continues a rough stretch for the Nittany Lions on the recruiting trail. He is the second Penn State commitment to change course in recent days, following quarterback Will Wood’s switch to Boston College.

Penn State Just Won A Recruiting Battle Ohio State Wanted

Penn State has added another piece to its 2027 recruiting board with the commitment of Jordan Hall, a three-star running back from Princeton High School in Cincinnati. Hall had been committed to Miami (OH) before reopening his recruitment, and the move quickly drew more attention as Power 4 programs lined up with offers, including Missouri and Ohio State.

For Penn State, landing Hall matters not just because of his upside at a position the staff always tracks closely, but because the Nittany Lions won out in a battle that had plenty of competition attached to it. Ohio States presence in the mix gave the recruitment an extra edge, and Halls decision gives Penn State an early win on the trail for a class still years from signing day. [Read more 🡒]

Former Penn State QB Is Suddenly At The Center Of A Huge ACC Win

Ethan Grunkemeyer has become one of the more interesting quarterback stories in college football this fall, and Penn State fans have reason to notice. The former Nittany Lion is now at Virginia Tech, where he has helped push the Hokies to a 6-2 start while piling up more than 2,140 passing yards and 17 touchdown throws in eight games.

His latest spotlight moment came in Virginia Techs win over Clemson, when he delivered the game-winning touchdown pass. It is a significant turn for a quarterback who once stepped into the Penn State starting job after an injury to the quarterback ahead of him, and it adds another layer to a season that has suddenly put him near the top of the national conversation. Penn States First Matt Campbell Verdict Is Hard To Ignore

Penn States first stretch under Matt Campbell has made the early read pretty clear: the Nittany Lions have shown enough in a few spots to suggest there is a foundation here, but not nearly enough consistency to hide a frustrating start. At 3-4 overall and still searching for a Big Ten win, the team has leaned on a receiver group that can make plays and a cornerback room that has held up better than expected, even as the offense has often stalled around it.

The bigger issue has been the uneven play from quarterback Rocco Becht and an attack that has struggled to find rhythm when the schedule tightens. For a program trying to turn a rough opening month into something more stable, the hope now is that returning key pieces next season can help close the gap between occasional promise and results that actually show up in the standings.
