Penn State’s players had a new message on their backs Tuesday morning, and it came straight from athletic director Pat Kraft.
Quarterback Rocco Becht and tight end Ben Brahmer were both spotted wearing shirts the team had not seen before. The shirts, handed out to the entire roster, carried a simple line: Own the outcome.
Brahmer explained that Kraft was the one behind the gesture and said the shirts came with a note in the players’ lockers.
“Mr. Kraft gave us (the shirts) with a note in our little lockers. So just owning the outcome and understanding that we gotta control what we can control and continue working as hard as we can in practice, and own whatever happens to us on Saturdays,” Brahmer said.
Kraft’s message lands at a moment when he’s already deeply tied to the direction of Penn State football. He made the decision to fire James Franklin in the middle of Franklin’s 12th season last October, setting off a coaching search that stretched nearly two months before the school hired Campbell.
Campbell is 4-4 overall and 1-4 in the Big Ten early in his Penn State tenure.
Kraft has also been a visible presence around the program, showing up on the sideline at every game and reacting openly when big moments hit. He was emotional, too, when discussing QB Drew Allar’s season-ending injury last year.
For Penn State right now, the slogan on the shirt matches the moment: the only thing the team can control is what it does Saturday at Washington. Kickoff is set for 3:30 on FS1.

Penn State Could Still Shape The CFP Race In A Frustrating Way
Penn States season has already taken a sharp turn from the expectations that followed an AP preseason ranking of No. 18. A four-game losing streak pushed the Nittany Lions to 4-4 before they steadied themselves with a win over Purdue in Week 9, and now the path ahead looks a little more manageable than the one they just navigated.
That softer finish matters beyond State College, because an 8-4 Penn State team could still end up shaping the College Football Playoff conversation in a frustrating way. USC, ranked No. 20 in the first CFP rankings, has its own rsum-building stretch ahead with games against Indiana and UCLA, and a 9-3 Trojans finish would look a lot better if it includes a win over Penn State. Penn State Still Has A Koby Howard Problem Fans Didn't Expect
Koby Howards season has become one of the quieter frustrations around Penn State, and it is starting to linger well past the point when anyone expected a second-year wide receiver to be back in the mix. Howard has been sidelined since Week 3 with an undisclosed injury, and by Week 10 he still had not returned to game action. Head coach Matt Campbell has said Howards work in practice has been very limited, which is never a promising sign this far into the fall.
The uncertainty is the part that stings most for Penn State, because this is no longer a short-term absence with a clean timetable attached. Howard has been listed as questionable for upcoming games, but the available signs point to a recovery that is moving slowly, if it is moving at all. For a team that expected to have him available by now, the wait has turned into a real roster concern. [Read more 🡒]
Penn State Faces An Early Road Test Fans Should Watch Closely
Penn States next trip already carries a little extra weight, even before the Nittany Lions leave the East Coast. A flight to Seattle makes this their longest road trip of the season, and it comes with a familiar but infrequent opponent waiting on the other side. Penn State has handled Washington well in the past, owning a 4-0 edge in the all-time series, including the last meeting in 2024.
Still, this one feels different enough to merit a closer look. The teams have not crossed paths often, and Penn State is entering as a slight underdog, which adds a layer of intrigue to an early-season test far from home. For a team with bigger goals ahead, how it responds in that setting could say plenty about the road ahead, even if the full picture will not be clear until the game is played. [Read more 🡒]
