Penn State’s latest Beaver Stadium renovation includes a quiet nod to Joe Paterno, and it is not exactly easy to miss once you know what you’re looking for.
Ahead of the Nittany Lions’ Week 1 season opener against Marshall, Penn State beat reporter Audrey Snyder pointed out that the sign for section 409 in the new upper west portion of the stadium uses inverted colors - a subtle reference to Paterno’s career win total.

Penn State has spent much of the past 15 years trying to move away from the figure who once defined its football program, especially after the Jerry Sandusky sexual abuse scandal and the end of Paterno’s tenure in Happy Valley. But the program has also shown a growing willingness to bring his name back into the conversation, most notably with the controversial “Paterno Family Football Experience” inside Beaver Stadium.
That backdrop makes the section 409 detail stand out. It is far less blatant than the family experience and nowhere near the old statue outside the stadium, but it still points directly at the coach who built Penn State into a national power before leaving in disgrace in 2011.
The history behind the number is well known. The NCAA stripped Paterno of 112 wins as part of the Sandusky sanctions, removing him from the record book as college football’s winningest head coach.
But in 2015, those wins were restored, bringing his total back to 409 and putting him 52 ahead of Bobby Bowden. He now sits 196 wins ahead of Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz, the winningest active head coach.
Penn State’s more understated approach may land better than the louder gestures, but Paterno remains a loaded topic around the sport. A small sign change will not stir the same reaction as the “Paterno Family Football Experience,” yet it still reopens the broader debate over how the school should remember him.
Matt Campbell appears prepared to lean into tradition during his time leading the Nittany Lions, and that approach has already been welcomed by former players. A record number of former Penn State lettermen are expected to attend Week 1 for his first game at Beaver Stadium.
There will always be people ready to argue about whether a statue should stand outside the stadium again. For now, Penn State has chosen a quieter way to acknowledge the coach’s legacy - one that keeps his name in view without putting it front and center.

In the 45-0 win, Del Rio-Wilson had a rough afternoon, and Penn State coach Matt Campbell pointed to the defensive effort as a major reason the Nittany Lions controlled the game from start to finish.
Now Penn State will see another familiar face in a different setting, with Temple using a rotation at quarterback that included former Nittany Lion Jaxon Smolik in a 38-14 win over Rhode Island. Smolik threw a touchdown pass and helped the Owls move the ball, another reminder that Penn States defense may have to keep track of more than one quarterback story line as the schedule unfolds. In his first game in a Penn State uniform, Becht was sharp from the start against Marshall, completing 13 of 18 passes for 271 yards and four touchdowns while avoiding turnovers in a lopsided Week 1 win to open the 2026 season.
