Max Granville is back on track, and Penn State’s coaching staff is making it clear the former four-star defensive end has turned heads this offseason.
Granville arrived in Happy Valley in 2024 with plenty of buzz around his upside on the edge. He was listed at about 6-foot-3 and 220 pounds when he committed, and after redshirting his true freshman year, he logged seven appearances with one tackle, one pass breakup and one pass defended. A lower body injury in the summer before the 2025 season slowed what was supposed to be his next step.
Now, heading into his redshirt sophomore season, Granville looks ready to take on the role Penn State envisioned for him. He has finished rehab and is expected to open the fall as a starter, giving defensive coordinator D'Anton Lynn another young piece to build around as the Nittany Lions settle into a new era.
The physical transformation is part of the story too. Granville is up to 252 pounds this season, a frame that fits what Penn State wants from a defensive end. The program also shared workout photos late in June, and the message from those images was hard to miss: Granville looks ready to be a problem.
Director of football strength and conditioning Reid Kagy praised the way Granville handled the grind of coming back.
“I've been super impressed with his work ethic,” Kagy said. “Coming back from injury is hard.
You can get caught in a lot of space, you can get lost in the whole process of it. Sometimes you can't see the light at the end of the tunnel.”
Granville is expected to be fully available for fall camp. According to Penn State Nittany Lions on SI, he also dealt with a minor back issue in the spring, though he was not shut down completely.
Kagy said the staff was eager to get a closer look at Granville once it arrived.
“[He] is somebody we were super excited about when we stepped in here,” Kagy said. “I know [Granville] was coming back from injury as well when we first got here, and [this is] the biggest thing about [him]: [Granville] is super humble, and [he] goes to work . . . We're excited for what he's gonna do this fall."

James Franklin Just Reopened Penn States Messiest Breakup Debate
James Franklins first public reflections on his 2025 firing at Penn State have only added another layer to a breakup that already felt complicated. After nearly 12 years in State College, he is moving quickly into the next chapter at Virginia Tech, where he says he plans to take the lessons from his Penn State run and apply them in Blacksburg. For a fan base that watched the relationship unravel over time, the timing of his comments only sharpens the sense that this was more than a simple end to a tenure.
Penn State athletic director Pat Kraft has already framed the decision as one driven by the programs broader trajectory, not just a short losing stretch, which matters because it suggests the split was about bigger concerns than one bad week. Franklins new landing spot has come with plenty of support, too, giving this story a very different feel on the other side of the breakup. Even so, the way he is talking now makes it clear the Penn State chapter is still being processed, and maybe not quite finished. [Read more 🡒]
James Armstrong Could Change How Penn State Fans See Campbell
James Bobo Armstrongs commitment gives Penn State a jolt at a position that always carries outsized weight in the fan base, and it arrives at a useful time for a program trying to steady its recruiting momentum. The Hopewell, Pennsylvania, quarterback is a four-star prospect, and his decision adds a local name with real buzz to a class that needed a lift.
For Matt Campbell, landing Armstrong is about more than one pledge. Penn State has spent recent weeks dealing with a few recruiting setbacks, and this one offers a chance to show the staff can still close on elite talent and keep building belief around the programs future. Whether it becomes the kind of domino that changes the tone of the cycle is the next question, but it is the sort of commitment the Nittany Lions have been waiting for. [Read more 🡒]
