After Penn State’s first loss of the season, the response came quickly.
The team held a players-only meeting Monday, a chance for the Nittany Lions to clear the air and make sure everyone was aligned with eight games left on the schedule. The message from inside that room was simple: the season is far from over.
“We had a big players’ meeting yesterday, and we all looked at each other and said, ‘We still have everything in front of us. We're going to continue to go out there and grind,’” Rocco Becht said Tuesday.
The meeting was put together by Campbell and the veterans because they felt it was necessary. Defensive tackle Keanu Williams said the point was less about slogans and more about getting everything out on the table.
“It comes into play in the sense of whatever the problems we're having, lay it on the table, and we all kind of got to sit here and you know just talk it out,” Williams said. “Whatever it is we need to talk out, whatever problems we're having, we need to sit there and be on the same page with that.”
Becht had a leading voice in the conversation, which fits the way he has been carrying himself around the team. His leadership has been a major talking point since the loss on Saturday, including the way he addressed the group afterward.
“Yeah, he played a big role. I think overall, we were just kind of making sure we were all on the same page, kind of going over what we had to do, what our goals for, getting ready for this week,” offensive lineman Trevor Buhr said.
Even with that praise, Becht pushed the credit back toward Campbell and the rest of the veterans. He said the team’s closeness made the meeting possible in the first place.
“Coach Campbell was a big product of why we were able to have those meetings because he's brought us so close together, and he's been able to connect us in a way that I feel like a lot of us haven't been able to do in a while,” Becht said.
The timing matters too. Penn State is working through a shorter week, with Northwestern coming up Friday instead of Saturday. Practice has already picked up, and the coaching staff added a couple more periods to sharpen the details.
Buhr said that was a clear point of emphasis.
“Detail aspect was a big thing for us this morning,” Buhr said. “That was like the main focus, I'd say, just making sure we're all moving in rhythm. So that was like the big thing this morning.”
The players know Saturday wasn’t good enough. It wasn’t up to their standard, and they’ve been trying to make sure that performance doesn’t linger.
Penn State is no longer in the AP Poll, but it still has eight chances to show what kind of team it is. That stretch includes a four-game run that features Michigan, USC and Washington, all of them either ranked or previously ranked.
Becht said the meeting reinforced the belief inside the locker room that the season still has plenty left.
“I think that meeting kind of showed everyone that we're still in this and we believe in one another and we trust in one another, and we know that last Saturday wasn't our best, and that's not us,” Becht said. “And so I definitely expect a different team Friday.”
