Penn State Is Betting On Rocco Becht Through A Dangerous Stretch

Despite recent struggles, Coach Matt Campbell backs Rocco Becht, citing his extensive experience and proven track record.

Penn State’s quarterback conversation got loud after Rocco Becht’s rough stretch, but Matt Campbell didn’t flinch.

After Becht struggled against Wisconsin and then turned in another uneven outing against Northwestern, the calls from Penn State fans on social media started rolling in. The backup, Alex Manske, became the obvious name in the conversation. Campbell, though, said after the game that the staff never seriously entertained the idea of making a change.

Becht finished 26 of 41 for 243 yards, with one touchdown and two interceptions. That touchdown came in garbage time, which only sharpened the frustration around the performance.

Campbell’s reasoning for sticking with Becht starts with the basics: experience. Becht has 44 starts, which is the most among active starting quarterbacks in college football.

“I think Rocco’s experience, number one.”

From there, Campbell pointed to Becht’s track record of getting through messy games and still finding a way to keep the offense moving.

“I think Rocco’s proven that he can work through a football game where you know it’s not perfect and having the ability to adjust within the football game. And to be honest with you, Rocco’s worked through hard before and he’s proven he’s got the great ability to do it. And you know the fact of the matter of it is, Rocco’s a winner.”

That last part is backed up by the record. Becht’s 29 wins make him the winningest active quarterback in college football.

Campbell leaned into that same idea when he talked about what Becht brings to Penn State in a tough moment.

“He’s won a lot of football games, and he’s had to work through really hard situations, and we’re kind of in one of those right now, and so his leadership and his ability to navigate, you know, the rough waters right now will be, I think, a testament to him as we get ourselves out of it.”

Becht’s own message matched the coach’s confidence. Asked by NSN’s Alan Saunders what about his experience could help Penn State get through the current stretch, Becht said he’s been in worse places before and expects to respond the same way now.

“I’ve gotten blown out before,” Becht said. “Just like today.

Against a team like Northwestern who’s good, who’s physical on defense, who’s sound, and I’ve won a lot of games. But at the end of the day, I’ve been down in the dumps like really bad, and I’ve brought myself back up, and I’m going to continue to do that now.

I’m not going to go and sulk and home and tell myself I’m bad at football. I’m going to continue to do what I do and continue to get better, because that’s all I know.

So we’ll see a different brand of football in the next coming weeks, because I’m going to hold this team accountable. Everyone’s going to hold this team accountable.

All of the leaders are going to continue to lead, and we’ll be fine.”

Even with the frustration around the results, both Becht and Campbell are saying the same thing: this isn’t good enough, and it has to change quickly.

“Rocco, we have great belief in,” Campbell said, “just like I have belief in all of our players, and really I have great belief in our coaches. But we got to find answers, and we got to get it fixed fast.”

Penn State Fans Have Another Saquon Barkley Reason To Be Miserable

Saquon Barkleys latest exit from a game with the Rams was the kind of sight that makes Penn State fans wince, because it came with an apparent hamstring injury and no return to action after the first quarter. For a player whose career has already included a major ACL tear in 2020, any lower-body issue carries extra weight, especially when it involves a part of the body that can linger for weeks before a running back is truly back to full speed.

For Penn State, the timing only adds to the unease. The Nittany Lions are already staring at a difficult stretch ahead with USC and Michigan on the schedule, and recent losses have left the seasons outlook cloudy. Losing even the conversation around one of the programs most recognizable stars to another injury scare is the sort of development that keeps the mood around State College uneasy, even before the next kickoff arrives. Penn State Already Has A Problem Fans Didn't Expect

Penn States early-season picture has changed fast, and not in the way fans expected when a new era began under Matt Campbell. By Week 5, the Nittany Lions were already dealing with back-to-back losses, a jarring turn for a program that entered the fall with far more optimism than this.

The setback lands in a week packed with head-turning college football moments elsewhere, from South Carolinas collapse against Kentucky to Michigans offensive trouble after losing to Iowa. Even the broader sport has been in motion, with Foxs Big Noon Kickoff and Barstool Sports parting ways, but for Penn State the focus is closer to home now, where the pressure is already building and the questions around this team are starting to pile up. Penn State Suddenly Has A Credibility Problem Fans Can't Ignore

Penn States rough stretch has turned what looked like a promising season into a much tougher sell. The 34-13 loss to Northwestern sent the Nittany Lions out of the Coaches Poll entirely, a sharp fall for a program that opened the year ranked and expected to stay in the national picture under new coach Matt Campbell.

The schedule does not offer much time to linger on the setback. USC and Michigan are next, and those matchups will give Penn State a chance to reestablish itself against high-profile opponents and climb back toward the top 25, but only if the Nittany Lions start looking like a different team than the one that just slipped against Northwestern.
