Penn State Hit With Tough 4-Star DL Loss

Penn State faces a setback as four-star defensive lineman Jon Ioane chooses Washington, highlighting the Huskies' intense recruitment advantage.

Penn State is still on the hunt for its first commitment from the Class of 2027, but the search continues. The Nittany Lions missed out on four-star defensive lineman Jon Ioane, who announced his commitment to Washington. Ioane, a standout from Tustin, California, chose the Huskies over Penn State, UCLA, Cal, and Stanford.

Ioane’s decision was punctuated with enthusiasm, as he expressed his excitement about joining the Huskies with a nod to their iconic “Purple Rain.” At 6’3” and 305 pounds, Ioane is a formidable presence on the field. Ranked 267th nationally and 24th among California prospects, his skills include quick footwork, explosive power, and the ability to disrupt plays, especially in the run game.

In 2025, Ioane demonstrated his versatility by playing on both sides of the line. His stats were impressive: 50 tackles, 21 quarterback hurries, 14 tackles for loss, four sacks, three pass breakups, and a forced fumble. It’s clear why Washington was eager to secure his commitment.

Ioane’s journey to Washington began with an offer in May 2024, followed by an unofficial visit in September 2025. He returned for the school’s Junior Day in March and considered other visits, but ultimately decided to cancel them. His connection with Washington was strong, as he felt the Huskies were the most persistent and engaging in their recruitment efforts.

Reflecting on his decision, Ioane shared that he always felt Washington was the right fit. The recruitment process was thorough, but his gut feeling led him to commit early, allowing him to focus on his senior year at Tustin without the distraction of ongoing recruitment. Now, with his college decision made, Ioane is ready to concentrate on making his final high school season a memorable one.
