Penn State found its spark in the form of a true freshman with sticky hands and no fear.
Josiah Zayas, who climbed from the bottom of the depth chart to start for defensive coordinator D’Anton Lynn in the first game of his career, came up with the kind of interception that stops a crowd in its tracks. Late in the first half in Ann Arbor, matched against Michigan star wide receiver JJ Buchanan as the Wolverines tried to push a two-minute drill, Zayas snatched a pass from Bryce Underwood with one hand for what looked like a possible play of the year.

That grab wiped out Michigan’s chance to get points before halftime and kept Penn State in front 3-0, with the lone score coming on a first-drive field goal.
The interception gave social media plenty to chew on. Penn State fans immediately latched onto the moment, flooding timelines with praise for the freshman’s playmaking burst and treating him like the real thing.

It was Zayas’s second interception of the season. The first came in Week 4, when he picked off Colton Joseph and returned it for a touchdown against Wisconsin.
His role has only grown since then. Zayas has seen more snaps at nickel after Zion Tracy moved back to safety, part of Lynn and head coach Matt Campbell’s attempt to keep shuffling a defense that has not clicked yet. Penn State is still looking for its first Big Ten win, and the unit has been under constant construction.
Zayas is the TRUTH
Bring him the entire bank this offseason. Idc how much it takes😂

For Campbell, the bigger picture around the roster is hard to ignore. Penn State’s 3-3 start in his first season in Happy Valley is rough, but the bigger problem is how thin the team looks in terms of young talent worth building around.
Campbell arrived after the early signing period, so his 16-player 2026 high school class was mostly made up of former Iowa State signees, including Zayas. He and general manager Derek Hoodjer also had a short window to work the transfer portal and wound up leaning heavily on their own roster, bringing in 24 former Cyclones.
That offseason left Penn State without much obvious foundation, and the list of promising young pieces is short. Wide receiver Koby Howard, who has been out since Week 3, is the closest thing to a building block on offense, while cornerbacks Daryus Dixson and Jahmir Joseph have shown promise on defense.
With the way Zayas has played through the first half of his true freshman season, he belongs on that list too. There’s no promise he becomes a star, but the flashes are loud enough to make him impossible to ignore.
One Penn State fan wouldn't mind seeing Zayas go two ways to help jumpstart a struggling offenes.

Even if that was said in jest, it says plenty about where Penn State fans are right now. They’re searching for something to hold onto, and Zayas keeps giving them a reason.

Penn State Fans Got A Court Decision They Will Have Strong Feelings About
A Centre County judge has declined to ease a parole restriction that keeps Braeden A. Phillips away from Penn State football games and wrestling matches, a decision that will resonate with plenty of fans who have followed the case. Judge Brian Marshall denied Phillips request to loosen the condition, which bars him from attending those events as part of the terms tied to his release.
Phillips pleaded guilty to making violent threats against State College Area High School and must stay at least 100 feet away from Penn State and other schools under his parole conditions. Marshall did leave the door open to a future request for a modification, but for now the restriction remains in place. [Read more 🡒]
Penn State Fans Just Got A New Twist In The Kayne Clary Saga
Kayne Clarys legal fight with Penn State has come to an abrupt halt, at least for now. The former Nittany Lions basketball captain has discontinued his federal defamation and unjust enrichment lawsuit against the university, coach Mike Rhoades and others, ending a case that had accused the program of intimidation, retaliation, slander and illegal use of his Name, Image and Likeness.
The move comes during the discovery stage, before the case had reached a courtroom test of those claims. Clary was suspended and dismissed from the team before moving on to Mississippi State and then Oklahoma State, and the latest development leaves Penn State with one less off-court issue to navigate even as the circumstances around his departure still linger in the background. Penn State Gets Encouraging Sign Before Tough Michigan Trip
Penn State heads into Ann Arbor with a familiar challenge in front of it, and the latest injury report at least gives both sides a clearer picture of who will be available for a game with real weight. The Nittany Lions are still dealing with several players sidelined, including some season-ending injuries, as they prepare for a matchup at the Big House, where their recent track record has not been kind.
Michigans report adds another layer of uncertainty, with two defensive ends listed as questionable ahead of kickoff. For Penn State, any edge matters on a trip that has not gone well lately, and the availability of a few key players could help shape whether this becomes another tough afternoon in Ann Arbor or a chance to finally change the feel of the series.
