The Penn State Nittany Lions took center stage at the Lasch Football Building and Holuba Hall for an event that’s become a cherished tradition, though this year brought a wave of fresh faces. Under the guidance of first-year head coach Matt Campbell, the team welcomed Four Diamonds families as part of the university’s renowned THON, a 46-hour dance marathon supporting pediatric cancer.
THON is a hallmark of Penn State’s community spirit, having raised over $17.7 million last year alone. The football team's involvement, known as the THON Explorers event, has been a staple for years. Players engage with Four Diamonds children through games, face painting, and some good old-fashioned football tossing.
This year was particularly special as Campbell, along with many of his new assistants and a group of 55 newcomers, including transfers and recruits, participated for the first time. For veteran offensive lineman Anthony Donkoh, events like this are crucial for integrating new team members into the Penn State culture.
“THON is the biggest thing that we do here at Penn State,” Donkoh shared, sporting a green snake face paint. “It’s humbling. Whatever challenges we face in college pale in comparison to what these families endure daily.”
Offensive lineman Cooper Cousins, a key figure in the Penn State community since 2024, highlighted an increased commitment from the football program to THON this year. Redshirt sophomore defensive end Max Granville initiated a team-specific donation link, with Coach Campbell pledging to match the funds raised as the donation period concludes. Players have also contributed using their NIL earnings.
Beyond THON, the team has been active in community service, packing school lunches and reading to elementary students. Cousins noted that Campbell and his staff are fostering a culture of giving back in Happy Valley. The new head coach was seen engaging with families, signing memorabilia, and sharing moments with attendees.
“I think any time you get to make a difference and impact kids’ lives, you should seize that opportunity,” Cousins said. “There are kids facing challenges far greater than ours, and we have the chance to make a positive impact.”
