Penn State Finally Gets Linebacker Help Before A Suddenly Crucial Test

Penn State bolsters its linebacker squad with strategic player shifts and returning talent, promising to fortify their defense against Purdue.

The thinnest spot on Penn State’s defense is finally getting a little breathing room.

With unranked Purdue coming to Beaver Stadium on Saturday, the Nittany Lions are making two moves that should help a linebacker room that has been stretched too far. Iowa State transfer Marcus Neal, Jr. is shifting from safety to linebacker, and backup Cam Smith is set to return after missing the last five games because of injury.

Head coach Matt Campbell said the goal is to give Penn State more usable bodies in a group that has been leaning heavily on starters Tony Rojas and Kooper Ebel, plus backup Cael Brezina.

Neal came to Penn State with some real production on his résumé. Last season, he posted 11 tackles for loss, picked off two passes and earned Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honors against Kansas State.

But the fit at safety never looked clean. Neal has shown inconsistent tackling, even though he has forced two fumbles and recovered another. He started five games before getting benched for the White Out against USC.

Now the Lions are betting that his frame - 6-foot-1, 216 pounds - plays better closer to the line.

“I just think for Marcus, it allows his talent and his ability to be at a place where we can use it even more, not only in first and second down, but multiplicity and situational football, too,“ Campbell said. "It’s about trying to find ways to get our best players on the field and put those guys in position to be the best within the scheme.

"Marcus just wants to play. There’s only one speed with Marcus. (We're) really excited about finding the right fit for him and the right home for him."

Smith’s return matters just as much. The redshirt freshman has been out since the mid-September game at Temple, and while Campbell said he had hoped to clear him to play two weeks ago at Michigan, the staff kept him out for precautionary reasons.

Campbell called Smith one of the team's "MVPs" during its off-week.

The timing is important because Rojas has been carrying a huge load. Through seven games, he leads Penn State in tackles with 56, tackles for loss with 10.5 and interceptions with two. He also has five sacks, more than the rest of the defense combined, which sits at four.

Penn State May Have Finally Fixed One Defensive Problem

Penn State has spent much of the season shuffling pieces on defense, and the latest adjustment points to how much the staff is still trying to settle the middle of the unit. Head coach Matt Campbell said Marcus Neal Jr. has been moved from safety to off-ball linebacker, a move intended to add depth after injuries and some uneven play have thinned that group. It is the kind of in-season switch that can say as much about necessity as it does about development.

Zion Tracy is going the other direction, sliding to safety in an effort to steady that spot and give the defense a more workable rotation. The changes underscore how fluid Penn States personnel plan has been as the season has unfolded, with the staff continuing to tweak both roles and scheme to find a combination that holds up better week to week. Penn State Gets An Early Heavyweight Test Cael Sanderson Needed

The early-season calendar is giving Cael Sanderson exactly the kind of measuring stick he wants, with the National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Star Classic set for Nov. 24 at Rec Hall. Penn State will put several of its biggest names on the mat in the showcase, including NCAA champion Josh Barr, national runners-up Shayne Van Ness and Rocco Welsh, and heavyweight Connor Mirasola.

For Sanderson, the appeal goes beyond the marquee matchups. The exhibition offers a useful first look at how Penn State stacks up in a live setting, especially at heavyweight, where Mirasola is slated to meet Wisconsins Braxton Amos. It is the sort of early test that can help clarify lineup decisions before the grind of the season really begins. [Read more 🡒]

Penn State's Quarterback Search Just Got More Pressing For Matt Campbell

Penn States quarterback pursuit in the 2027 class just got a little more complicated during the Week 8 bye, when Matt Campbell and his staff tried to make a late push for Braylen Warren. The four-star quarterback has been on Missouris board for a while, and the Tigers have been his commitment since December 2025, leaving Penn State to keep searching for a long-term answer under center.

The urgency is easy to see from Penn States side. The Nittany Lions still do not have a committed quarterback in the 2027 class after Will Wood decommitted, and Warren would have represented a major addition with the kind of production that made him such a sought-after prospect. Instead, Penn State is back in the market, and the next move in that search will matter plenty for a program still trying to lock down its future at the most important position on the field.
