Penn State Faces A New Receiver Concern Before Purdue

Key injuries could impact the Penn State vs. Purdue showdown, with star players' statuses still uncertain ahead of Saturdays matchup.

Penn State’s receiver room took another hit Friday night, while Purdue’s injury picture also sharpened ahead of Saturday’s Halloween matchup at Beaver Stadium.

The biggest change on the Nittany Lions’ Big Ten-mandated availability report was Koby Howard dropping from questionable to doubtful. Howard, who hasn’t played since Sept. 19, had been listed as questionable on both Wednesday and Thursday. Chase Sowell, meanwhile, stayed in the questionable category after being listed there earlier in the week.

Penn State’s report also included a long list of absences. The Nittany Lions listed four players as probable, two as questionable, one as doubtful and 12 as out for the conference game. Among the out group were cornerbacks Joshua Johnson, Christian Askew and Tyler Armstead; defensive ends Max Granville and Mason Robinson; linebacker Alex Tatsch; safety Omarion Davis; defensive tackle Alijah Carnell; offensive lineman Will Tompkins; tight end Cooper Alexander; defensive tackle Liam Andrews; and kicker Cristiano Rosa.

Carnell was downgraded from doubtful. Granville, Tatsch, Robinson and Tompkins are all dealing with season-ending or long-term injuries.

Johnson, Askew, Armstead, Alexander, Andrews and Rosa have all been out for multiple games. Davis has appeared on and off the report this season, but he still hasn’t played in a game for Penn State.

There were also three names missing from the report after extended absences: linebacker Cam Smith, defensive end Dayshaun Burnett and defensive end LaVar Arrington II. Smith and Burnett have not played since the season opener against Marshall, while Arrington underwent a “clean-up procedure” on his knee during the preseason.

A few other Penn State notes stood out this week. McPherson opened the week as questionable before being upgraded to probable on Thursday.

McPherson, Kemajou and Sowell all handled post-practice media obligations during the week. Cooper also drew attention after taking a light workload against Michigan for precautionary reasons, with the note that he is now 13 months removed from a torn ACL that ended his 2025 season after four games.

Kemajou, Nnodim and Sowell have each dealt with different bumps and bruises this season that landed them on the injury report.

Purdue’s Friday report was shorter. The Boilermakers had no players listed as probable or questionable. Instead, DB Jaden Mangham and WR De’Nylon Morrissette were downgraded from questionable to doubtful, while TE Kylan Fox and DB Radarrion Daniels were ruled out.

Mangham has 30 tackles, 0.5 tackles for loss and one pass defense this season. Morrissette has eight catches for 125 yards.

Penn State and Purdue are set for a 4:15 p.m. ET kickoff Saturday at Beaver Stadium in State College.

The game will air on Big Ten Network with Chris Vosters, Anthony Herron and Dannie Rogers on the call. Penn State is favored by 10.5 points over Purdue, according to Caesars Sportsbook.

The Big Ten first introduced pregame availability reports before the 2024 season and expanded the process for 2026 to include three more reports during the week. Teams now submit updates by 8 p.m. ET three days, two days and one day before a game, with a final report coming two hours before kickoff on game day.

For midweek reports, players are labeled probable, questionable, doubtful, out or out (1st Half). On game day, the categories narrow to game time decision, out and out (1st Half).

If a player isn’t listed, he’s considered available. For visiting teams, the conference says players are included if they were part of the travel squad or if they were not traveling but are part of the two-deep or otherwise regularly participate.

Penn State Faces A Levi Haines Decision That Could Change Everything

Levi Haines is back in the Penn State wrestling conversation at exactly the right time, with the recent World Champion at 79 KG now waiting on eligibility approval under the new five-for-five rule. Cael Sanderson said Haines is attending classes and preparing to wrestle if he is cleared, which gives the Nittany Lions a potentially major boost as they get ready for the season.

Penn State opens against Bloomsburg at Rec Hall, and Haines status is one of the biggest early storylines around the program. A decision on whether he can compete this season would shape both the lineup and the ceiling for a team that already expects to be in the national title mix. [Read more 🡒]

Penn State Showed A Different Response When This Big Ten Game Got Ugly

Penn States trip to Purdue had the feel of a game that could have slipped away early, especially after miscues and missed chances kept the pressure on. Rocco Becht helped steady things with a touchdown, and Carson Hansen added a rushing score as the offense found enough rhythm to keep the Nittany Lions moving in a Big Ten matchup that had its rough patches.

Purdue briefly grabbed momentum with a blocked punt that turned into a touchdown, but Penn States defense answered by tightening up and allowing only three points the rest of the way. Matt Campbell pointed to the penalties and the way his team responded, and the bigger takeaway for Penn State was simple: when the game got ugly, it found a way to settle in and finish.
