Penn State Coaching Search Shifts After Jeff Brohm Stays Put at Louisville

As Penn State's coaching search narrows, one high-profile name officially stays off the table.

Jeff Brohm Staying Put at Louisville, Removing His Name from Penn State Coaching Search

Another name has officially come off the board in Penn State’s search for its next head football coach. Jeff Brohm, long rumored as a potential candidate, is staying put at Louisville.

According to reports, Brohm has informed Louisville leadership that he’s not pursuing other opportunities and remains fully committed to the program. That’s a significant development, especially on a day when the coaching carousel has been spinning fast and furiously.

Earlier in the day, Ohio State offensive coordinator Brian Hartline accepted the South Florida job. Then Georgia Tech locked down Brent Key with an extension. Now, with Brohm pulling out of the conversation, Penn State’s list of potential candidates continues to shrink.

Let’s be honest-Brohm’s name made sense in the mix. He checks a lot of boxes: proven winner, offensive-minded, and someone who’s built programs with staying power.

His run at Purdue brought the Boilermakers their most consistent success in decades, going 36-34 over six seasons from 2017-2022. That might not jump off the page at first glance, but context matters.

Purdue had been floundering before Brohm arrived, and he turned them into a tough out in the Big Ten.

His move to Louisville, his alma mater, only raised his profile. In his first two seasons, he notched 10 and 9 wins, and he just wrapped up the 2025 regular season with an 8-4 mark. That’s not just stability-it’s momentum.

And make no mistake, Brohm’s offensive credentials are a major part of his appeal. For a program like Penn State, which hasn’t had a truly beloved offensive coordinator since Joe Moorhead left in 2017, that kind of pedigree is especially attractive. Brohm’s system has consistently produced results, and he’s shown an ability to adapt and evolve with the game.

But while the fit might’ve looked intriguing on paper, there was always the question of whether Brohm would actually leave Louisville. He’s not just coaching there-he’s home.

Born and raised in the city, Brohm played quarterback for the Cardinals, as did his brothers Brian and Greg, both of whom are now on his staff. There’s a deep-rooted connection to that program, one that’s hard to walk away from-especially when you’re winning.

Still, the fact that Louisville hadn’t yet extended Brohm’s deal left the door cracked open just enough for speculation. And with Penn State still without a head coach, his name naturally surfaced as a possibility. But now, that door is closed.

So where does that leave Penn State? The search continues, and with each passing hour, the pool of available candidates grows thinner. But in a coaching cycle where surprises are the norm, there’s still plenty that could happen.

For now, though, scratch Jeff Brohm off the list. He’s staying in Louisville, and the Nittany Lions will have to look elsewhere.
