College football’s quarterback market is already heating up for the class of 2028, and Christopher Vargas is moving fast.
The 6-foot-4, 195-pound signal-caller will announce his college commitment on Saturday, according to Hayes Fawcett of Rivals. That puts one of the nation’s most coveted young quarterbacks on the clock well ahead of the usual timetable, with many 2028 prospects still sorting out visits and waiting until the spring or summer of 2027 to make their calls.
Vargas sits at the very top of the position group. Rivals 300 and ESPN 300 both have him as the No. 1 quarterback in the class of 2028, while he is also the consensus No. 1 player in Massachusetts. Rivals’ industry rankings and 247Sports each place him among the 10 best prospects in the entire class.
The production matches the hype. Over two seasons as St.
John’s Preparatory School’s starter, Vargas has thrown for 3,168 yards, 41 touchdowns and five interceptions. He also brings a multi-sport background, competing in baseball and track and field at St.
John’s Prep in addition to football.
Rivals’ Charles Power described Vargas in March as a "gifted arm talent who looks like one of the purest passers early on in the 2028 cycle" and pointed to his ability "to generate easy velocity while locating his passes into small windows with accuracy and touch."
Ohio State is viewed as the front-runner by both 247Sports and Rivals. If Vargas lands with the Buckeyes, he would become the program’s first top-five quarterback signee since Tavien St.
Clair in the class of 2025. Ohio State also managed to keep its 2027 quarterback commit intact despite UCLA making a run at him in the spring.
The Buckeyes already have some appealing pieces lined up around a future quarterback in the 2028 class. Four-star IMG Academy running back Elijah Newman-Hall has been committed since June 13, 2025, and five-star wide receiver Jett Harrison, a Buckeye legacy, pledged on July 1.
Penn State is also firmly in the mix, with Vargas taking five visits there - the same total he made to Ohio State. The Nittany Lions already have an in-state quarterback commitment in James Armstrong, who is ranked No. 12 at the position in the class of 2028.
The recruiting battle has largely centered on Big Ten schools, though ACC programs Boston College and Syracuse have also hosted Vargas. Boston College, in particular, has seen him four times over the last three seasons as it tries to keep the top Massachusetts prospect close to home.

Penn State mens basketball is dealing with another offseason storyline after Jay Rodgers was charged with DUI and other misdemeanors following a late-night encounter with police in State College. According to the report, an officer saw Rodgers nearly cause a collision and later noted signs of impairment during a field sobriety test, leaving the program to navigate the kind of off-court issue that can linger well beyond the summer.
Rodgers also refused preliminary breath and blood tests, saying he had been instructed to do so by his parents and coach, while Penn State Athletics said its coaches do not advise student-athletes to refuse legal testing.
