James Franklin and Mike Locksley have crossed paths plenty of times, and the most recent chapter between them still hangs over this week’s Virginia Tech-Maryland matchup.
Franklin’s last meeting with Locksley came in 2024, when Penn State rolled Maryland 44-7. That win was part of a 13-3 season that sent the Nittany Lions to the playoff before losses to Ohio State, Oregon and Notre Dame in the Orange Bowl. Not long after, Franklin’s Penn State tenure ended anyway, as he was fired in October after 12 seasons following back-to-back losses to UCLA and Northwestern.
Locksley remains at Maryland, though he entered this season on the hot seat. He also had reason to remember that last game against Franklin, because the two exchanged tense words at midfield after Penn State scored a touchdown as time expired in the blowout.
Locksley did not hide his frustration afterward.
“I just asked about his family, Christmas cards, addresses, all those things,” he told reporters. “[Expletive] is what it was.
I respect the game, I’ve got a ton of respect for James, his program. I think it was [expletive].”
Franklin saw it differently.
“I get it, right? At the end of the game, we throw a touchdown.
I get it,” he said. “But a couple things, I will say.
My job is to put [third and fourth stringers] in the game, but when the threes and fours get to go in the game, they get to play football. Those guys deserve to play football.
Your ones are in the game. You were trying to score.”
Franklin also pointed out at the time that Penn State was still chasing a playoff berth.
The connection between the two coaches goes back to Maryland, but only for a short stretch. They were on Ralph Friedgen’s staff together from 2000 to 2002, with Franklin coaching wide receivers and Locksley coaching running backs.
Locksley then left for Florida in the same role and did not return to Maryland until 2012. By then, Franklin was already at Vanderbilt.
Franklin was also the head coach in waiting under Friedgen before Friedgen was fired after the 2010 season.
Against Maryland during his Penn State run, Franklin went 9-2 and won by an average margin of 32.6 points. He was 5-1 against Locksley, including that 2024 rout.
For now, both coaches are keeping the temperature down. Franklin has spoken warmly about his Maryland days, saying, “It’s probably where I grew the most as a coach," he told media this week.
"My time with Ralph Friedgen, one of the better coaches that I’ve ever been around. That was a huge adjustment.
I was actually on the previous staff, and both me and [Locksley] were retained, and I learned a ton of ball in a short period of time, not only offense but also how to kind of run a program. A tough, disciplined, hard-nosed program.
And we won a bunch of games and had a ton of success.”
Locksley, for his part, said the past won’t matter when the game is played.
"Obviously those things, like I said, have happened," Locksley said when he was asked, rather pointedly, about the postgame moment with Franklin in 2024. "Will have no bearing on the game.
And yeah I would love, we got to make The Shell a hard place to play. And not because of anything personal.
Because as I said this won't be about James, this won't be about Locks, this will be about the players on the field."
